Peter Proscia’s Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher’s Barese (Laoban), undefeated in three games that started against New York hybrid colleagues, prepared for a tilt at the GII Wood Memorial April 9 with a six-time stretch in 1:16.42 at Belmont Park on Saturday.
“He really is a good horse. We are looking forward to Wood and are excited for the opportunity,” said Staudacher.
As the first Belmont winner last May for coach Mike Maker, Barese returned with a 2 3/4 win in Rego Park S. January 9 and another Gander S. mile on May 12. 2.
Staudacher said he hopes Barese will enjoy taking two turns in the Nine-Feathed Wood Memorial.
“The long-term job is to keep him in line with Wood. We think with the way he finishes his last race, he should be able to win nine feathers,” said Staudacher. “I don’t think he should have a problem with the open company either. He runs a big number [87 Beyer] last time.”
Barese, the $150,000 item at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale, is a blood brother to the set breakfasts.
Proscia and Staudacher also campaign Lady Scarlet (Union Rags), winner of the six-hairy Cicada S. Saturday.
“She is really getting better. Mike and his team have done a great job of getting her ready, letting her mature and educating her,” Staudacher said. “As a pony, that’s really important. She came out of the race well and we are very excited about that. ”
Among Lady Scarlet’s possible targets were the seven-haired GIII Beaumont S. at Keeneland on April 10.
“I think it’s a perfect distance for her; That will be decided by Mike and Peter, but it will be a good position for her,” Staudacher said. “She’s getting better and better, so that’s a good thing.”
