Finally, 2023 could be the year when the 2TB PS5 SSD is really worth the upgrade. Last year, the price of a 1TB PS5 SSD averaged around $150, while a 2TB SSD hovered near $300. This year, we see 1TB SSDs drop below $100 and 2TB SSDs under $200. The reason PS5 SSD upgrades are expensive is because you can’t use any old SSD and expect it to work fine on a PS5 console. You’ll want to choose a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 solid-state drive with a rated read speed of 5,500 MB/s to match the PS5’s internal drive. That means, for better or worse, choose a top-of-the-line SSD.

Note that Sony recommends a heatsink that attaches to your SSD. Not all SSDs listed here have heatsinks pre-installed. For those who do, we will definitely mention it. For the ones that don’t, all you have to do is buy your own radiator (we recommend this for 10 bucks) and install it yourself. It is very easy.

This one is “optimized for PS5” as it includes a pre-installed rugged heatsink that’s slim enough to fit in a PS5 bay without issue. In terms of performance, the MP600 Pro matches the best SSDs available with sequential read speeds of 7,100 MB/s and sequential write speeds of 6,800 MB/s.

This is definitely the lowest price we’ve seen for a branded 2TB PS5 SSD, especially since the drive even includes a slim aluminum heatsink. The VP4300 is a M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 x4 solid-state drive with rated transfer speeds of 7,400 MB/s read and 6,800 MB/s write. That puts it well beyond the PS5’s recommended 5,600 MB/s speed claim.

How easy is it to install an SSD?

It’s super easy! Remove the case completely without tools. In fact, the only screw you have to remove is the screw that secures the SSD bay cover. You don’t even put it back when you’re done. Sony has a quick and easy way YouTube video tutorial.

What if the SSD I bought doesn’t have a heatsink?

Sony recommends installing an SSD with an included heatsink. If the SSD you buy does not include an SSD, you can simply buy one for about $10 on Amazon and add it yourself. Most of these radiators are attached only with an adhesive such as thermal tape.
