BMW concept imagines a sexier bread cart based on the Z4

The BMW Coupe travel concept was launched at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

Said to be unique, the concept is based on Z4but instead of the sponsor car’s folding softtop and three-box shape, the Touring Coupe has a fixed roof and a radical design with a flat rear end.

The body of the concept car is finished with a gray-brown paint job dipped in blue glass shards. There are also copper-silver accents throughout and a unique pattern to the dual kidney grille with vertical slats.

Although the Touring Coupe’s elongated roofline doesn’t allow you to carry any more passengers, it greatly improves cargo capacity.

The trunk has a lanyard, leather lining the sides and floor, a tub-shaped design that partially hides the brace connecting the two wheel cavities.

The leather for the concept’s cabin and trunk was made by Italian interior design firm Poltrona Frau, while Schedoni, a leather goods brand from Modena, handcrafted the luggage set to match the vehicle.

According to BMW, the Concept Touring Coupe shares the same name and draws inspiration from the 328 Touring Coupe from the late 1930s, which won the 1940 Mille Miglia race.

The concept is also said to pay homage to the first modern BMW to wear the Touring: 02 shooting brake badge from the 1970s.

Interestingly, the automaker did not mention the Z3 coupe. Like the Touring Coupe, it’s more of a brake or hatch than a coupe, but it misses out on BMW’s signature Hoffmeister bend.

Stylistically, it’s a familiar taste and has been described by some media as a “bread cart”.

The Touring Coupe rides on 20-inch light yellow alloy wheels at the front and 21-inch rims at the rear. Under the long bonnet of the car is an inline six-cylinder petrol engine, but BMW did not say which variant the concept model is using.
