A man has a past that he cannot remember. A movie with a past we can’t forget. Together, they should immediately capture our imaginations. In the first quarter, they almost made it. And then a level of monotony forms and engulfs the film. Are not Bob Biswas Horror film written by Sujoy Ghosh and Bob Biswas the murderer butchered by Abhishek Bachchan may hold a candle for their predecessors.
Bob Biswas, a spin-off from the character Saswata Chatterjee completely nailed in 2012’s forgettable Kahaani, is a disappointingly pale character who is able to recreate the chilling effect the original assassin had on audiences. fake. With a whole movie set for him and his puzzling motives, Bob pushed him way too much. He often withers under the burden.
There is very little in Bob Biswas (except for the character widths and the dark neighborhoods and alleys of Kolkata) are consciously designed to recall the key elements on which Kahaani is made. In a way, it makes sense that the movie is more than just a sequel to Kahaani.
Bob Biswas, streaming on Zee5, has its own slow-recorded rhythm with explosive action sequences. Its parts are clearly viewable, even intermittently graspable. The end result is, however, somewhat poor.
First-time director Diya Annapurna Ghosh delivers a smooth and steady film. However, it is not as convincing and attractive as the movie that gave birth to the character of the same name.
The main character does not remember the past. For their part, the audience has memories of the crackling bang of Sujoy Ghosh led by Kahaani led by Vidya Balan. Comparisons, as hard as they may sound, are inevitable. We look for the same kind of horror in this kahaani centered around one of the supporting characters getting a life and logic of their own in the 2012 movie. Expectations have largely remained unfulfilled.
That’s not to say Bob Biswas nothing goes for it. It’s a well-crafted movie. It has its share of impressive moments. The scenario revolves around a banned drug called Blue, which helps students overcome the sadness of their exams. Bob is sucked into the world of peddlers.
Bob returns to his ‘normal’ state after 8 years in a coma. He can’t recall anything that happened before an accident left him fighting. He accidentally gets lost in the Kolkata underworld and gets caught up in the dangerous plots of ruthless drug dealers, corrupt policemen and their violent minions.
Inspector Indira Verma (Tina Desai), after killing a criminal and his gang outside a bar full of seeds, is tracking down the killer. Bob is in her sights.
The man now has a wife, Mary (Chitrangda Singh), a daughter, Mini (debutante Samara Tijori), and a school-going son, Benny (Ronith Arora). He also got his old job back as a life insurance agent although if logic is strictly applied he is said to have no recollection of all that the job entails.
The past pursues him and halfway through the clip, he begins to recognize parts of it. Such a flash involved a man he killed in the period before his amnesia, and it led to a revelation so important that it almost resembled a small climax that came too soon. Another case involved Bob stumbling upon bills he had stashed away years ago only to forget where he had kept them.
Like Bob, the teenage girl Mini, who is preparing for her medical entrance test, has problems with her memory. To alleviate the growing stress, she continues to feed into the machine the blue pills that all young people are under pressure to do well academically. Bob has very little time to focus on family matters despite the film’s determination to humanize him. Before he can arrange his life – and mind – the police and criminals on his trail force him into their universe. He doesn’t add up at all but plays along. He asked a policeman who knew more than he did: “Maine yeh kaam pehle bhi aap logon ke liye kiya hai (Have I done this work for you before)? “
A mysterious elderly pharmacist Kali Krishna Paul (Bengali veteran film, television and stage actor Paran Bandopadhyay who performs Saswata Chatterjee here by assisting the main actors) helps ease Bob’s return to life. life he left behind.
Kali Da, as Bob calls the fluent chemist, provides him with the means he requires to do his bidding of his ‘masters’. “Mujhe kuch yaad nahi hai par kaam phir se shuru karna hai (I don’t remember anything but I have to get on with my work)”, said Bob. Can Bob be tamed? He hopes to put the past behind him and lead a stable, event-free life. But the drug dealers – Ustaad (Kaushik Raj Chakraborty) and Bubaai (Purab Kohli in a special appearance) – and two Special Branch police – Jishu (Bhanu Uday Goswami) and Kharaj (Vishwanath Chatterjee) – entice. he gets into situations that see him shooting dead people without eyelids.
Of course, Bob’s cold, clinical approach to murder stems from his inability to remember why he’s doing what he’s doing. He simply gets a picture on a flip phone given to him by two policemen, finds out who he was ordered to kill, and pulls the trigger without betraying any emotion.
The anti-hero behaves like an injured car regardless of the grave danger he faces every time he walks out with a gun in his pocket. The audience knows that he is facing serious danger; Bob himself has no clue. Oddly enough, we didn’t feel any real stress despite being aware of Bob’s vulnerability.
The lack of strength in his relationships – with his wife, son, daughter, a pastor (Barun Chanda), his moral guide and a Dhonu roadside noodle shop owner (Pavitra Rabha) who always looks to him for help from Bob. was once extended to him – preventing us from developing any particular idea of the chaos raging in Bob’s mind and heart.
The main actor uses a bare image, a glittering eye, and an unsteady gait to convey the blurred state of the character’s mind. Even so, all efforts, Abhishek Bachchan are Bob Biswas never jump off the screen.
The director, assisted by cinematographer Gairik Sarkar, does a fair job in tapping into the technical resources at her disposal. But the film’s surface is undeniably overwhelming in its pivotal performance and plot. Both seem to work too hard, making Bob Biswas an immature, tame love affair.
