Bozy Ennis: Ryan Garcia never intended to gain weight
Trainer Derek 'Bozy' Ennis, father of welterweight champion Jaron 'Boots' Ennis, believes Ryan Garcia never intended to make weight for his fight with Devin Haney on Saturday.
Bozy thinks Ryan wanted to play head-to-head with Haney from day one, but he believes he was trained to fight. He just doesn't want to drop to 140, which would be difficult for him.
It doesn't make sense. Given the $500k per pound bet Ryan (24-1, 20 Kos) placed with Haney, it's unlikely he intentionally didn't make weight. You can see Ryan is eating well during camp and he looks plump a few weeks before the game.
He was clearly carrying too much weight and had misjudged his ability to cut it. I was under the impression that Ryan delayed starting the weight cut during competition week, and by the time he started it was too late.
What fans don't know is that Ryan weighed in at 143 lbs for his last fight with Oscar Duarte last December. Ryan wanted an attractive weight class for that fight because he was having a hard time getting down to 140.
Coach Derek 'Bozy' Ennis weighs in
“I think he wanted to do it from the beginning. I don't think he ever wanted to make weight,” trainer Derek 'Bozy' Ennis told fight about Ryan Garcia getting heavy.
I don't see it as a case of Ryan Garcia playing head-to-head with Haney. He said he tried his best to get down to 140, but he wouldn't kill himself to lose those last 3 pounds. If Ryan loses weight, he will be too weak to win.
“I think he's been working out because he looks in shape. One thing about Devin is he can box and he will fight you. So I don't see him hitting Devin unless he catches Devin with his hook, takes him down, or knocks him out. But I don't see him hitting Devin.
“I think Devin will move up in the future. So I see it as a big fight,” Bozy said of Haney finally moving up to 147 and fighting his son, Jaron 'Boots' Ennis.
Bill Haney's reaction
Bill Haney told fightgave his thoughts on Ryan Garcia being overweight during Friday's weigh-in for his fight with Devin Haney on Saturday.
If Haney picks a fight with Ryan on Saturday, he may not make it out of the ring with his undefeated record. Haney looked terrible as he checked his weight, revealing dark circles under both eyes. He didn't look as bad as the last two matches, but he still looked exhausted.
