Russell Stover’s chatty heart and foil box were huge and in charge at my local pharmacy, and I said to them, “Welcome.” Unlike the rude appearance of Halloween candy in August, the retail craze for Valentine’s Day during the first week of January energizes me. It fits my own desire for the winter months to speed up. Bring an egg dye kit and Mother’s Day card. Let’s set our goal in spring.
Slow down. YES. It is the first week of the new year. Stay in the moment. How many of us are determined to be more present in 2023? How many of us violated that resolution? Depending on the bleak research you read, somewhere between everyone and everyone and their brother will break their New Year’s goals by February 14th. How can we make it? different this year?
Resolve to always be resolved. That sounds terrible, but it really is a kind of liberation. For you, January could be a terrible time to start kicking your bad habits. Depending on where you live, the days can be shorter, darker, and colder – exactly the worst conditions for getting up early and putting on a HIIT workout.
You don’t need a specific day of the year to start changing your life. You can be determined to do something different – spend less money, be kinder, drink more water – at any time. And you can decide to do these things for an hour, a day, a week. Then see if you want to continue. Vow to overhaul your life on January 1st and try to stick with the changes forever is a high order.
When you come up with a solution, be it now or in six weeks or in July (or never – you’re perfect your way), remember that a solution doesn’t have to be punitive. It doesn’t necessarily involve appetite suppression or behavior unless you want to. You may be determined to reward yourself more. You may be determined to take more naps. And the resolution doesn’t have to be huge. It can be small and boring and only make sense to you.
The real reason I like it Always solve is that it reminds me that there is always a clean vehicle. There’s always a day, a month, or a year ahead where I don’t make a mistake. Currently, there is the calendar year 2023 and that gives a neat organizing principle. But there’s also a year between March 9, a year between August 23. There’s a blank canvas for next Tuesday. How will you fill it?

🎮 “Penitent”: The world of video games is really big. Last year, it included hardcore open-world dark fantasy titles like “Elden Ring” (for many, the game of 2022), surprising Zen experiences like “PowerWash Simulator” and games this, which I started just before the holidays and is slowly making my way through. “Pentiment” is set in 16th century Bavaria, and you play as a manuscript illuminator who must ultimately investigate a murder. (It sells itself, doesn’t it?) With an interface that tries to emulate medieval art styles, it’s a mostly text-based game that becomes more engaging the longer you play.
🍿 “M3gan”: As Jason Zinoman notes in his review of this new horror comedy, once the release of award-winning films pauses at the end of the year, January could bring more notoriety (and often fun). Here, an unexpected scientist tasked with taking care of her niece invented a genuine robot to help. Things didn’t go as planned. Zinoman called it “a ridiculous, derivative and irresistible killer doll movie.”

Hearty kale, squash and bean soup
If simmering a large pot of soup is on your agenda this weekend, I might recommend David Tanis’s hearty kale, squash and bean soup? Filled with greens, beans and winter squash, it’s a transitional and very fatty vegetable. A little sausage – chorizo or kielbasa – floating among the vegetables adds richness, fatness and firmness. (You can also skip the meat and sauté some cumin or smoked paprika instead.) Make a full pot this afternoon and then eat it all week. Or freeze some for later. Knowing that you have cans of homemade soup in the freezer is as comforting as a flickering fire, but so much more convenient.
