BYD has filed a trademark application Shark in Australia, may be used for the brand's first ute model, as well as some names corresponding to plug-in hybrid sedans sold overseas.
Unlike other BYD records, “pickup” appears in the classification field on IP Australia. Application submitted on January 31, 2024.
BYD has also applied to register the Shark name with the South African Companies and Intellectual Property Commission in January.
The ute is expected to be launched at the Beijing Auto Show, which begins on April 25. clear example recently published by AutoDinámico.
BYD's Australian distributor has previously confirmed the model will launch locally in the second half of 2024, although several examples of the dual-cab have been tracked for testing.
Unspecified changes have been made to the vehicle as a result of local testing, but BYD's distributor has not confirmed what these changes are.
Overseas reports claim the BYD ute will launch as a plug-in hybrid for the first time, combining a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors for combined system power is 365kW – enough to generate 292kW of power. Ford Ranger Raptor be ashamed.
An electric version is expected to appear later.

BYD has also filed to trademark King and King L in Australia, suggesting it may be looking to add a plug-in hybrid sedan to its growing roster.
These nameplates were also submitted to IP Australia on 31 January 2024.
The King name is applied in markets like Mexico to the impressively named (if more elegantly styled) Destroyer 05, a plug-in hybrid sedan that spans the small and mid-range segment.
It is 4780mm long, 1837mm wide and 1495mm tall on a 2718mm wheelbase, midway through its 4630mm length Toyota Corolla and 4905mm long Camry sedan.
The Destroyer 05's plug-in hybrid powertrain uses a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine with 81kW of power and 135Nm of torque, combined with a 132kW/316Nm electric motor and lithium iron battery. phosphate (LFP) 8.3kWh.
It has a claimed electric range of 50km according to the NEDC cycle.
First revealed in 2021, the Terminator 05 is closely related to the Qin Plus, which in turn is based on the 2018 classic Qin Pro.
BYD somewhat confusingly offers two parallel lines under its eponymous brand in China, called the Ocean and Dynasty series.
The Destroyer 05 is effectively the Ocean version of the Qin Plus from the Dynasty line, and both models were earlier this year 20% off in China. Currently, they start at just 79,800 yuan, or AU$17,523, and are cheaper than some purely combustion-powered rivals.
There is currently no King L anywhere in the world, but BYD is about to launch a next-generation model in the Qin series called the Qin L.

According to records of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shared by Chinese auto newsThe Qin L is 4830mm long, 1900mm wide and 1495mm tall on a 2790mm wheelbase – roughly the size of a Camry or BYD's electric car Sedan seal.
It will offer two plug-in hybrid powertrain options, both using a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
The first has a total system power of 120kW, with a range of 60km on the CLTC cycle from a 10.08kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, while the second has a total power of 160kW and uses a 15.87kWh LFP battery with a range 90km on electric power.
It's worth noting that filing a trademark application doesn't necessarily confirm a vehicle will come to Australia, but it does demonstrate a brand wants to protect its name from use by other brands.
There are many BYD nameplates that have been trademarked locally but remain unused, such as Tan, Han and Song. These were filed again in 2022.
BYD also filed for defense seagulls nameplate in 2023, but the electric hatch is yet to be confirmed for a local launch.
There are also some trademarked BYD names that are not used abroad, such as Carpe and Halo. Both names are filed in 2022.
The company's extensive registration records leave many BYD nameplates unprotected in our market, although the company has not filed trademarks for Yuan Pro, Yuan Up and Frigate 07 or any of Qin's nameplates .
