Cadillac Celestiq can cost over $300,000

  • GM hasn’t said anything officially, but The Wall Street Journal spoke to “people familiar with the matter,” who said the upcoming luxury EV will start at around $300,000 and will feature options that could push the price “beyond” that threshold.
  • Celestiq won’t just be any Caddy, or any EV. The plans call for a roof made of smart glass that each person in the car will be able to adjust to their quadrant, as well as using more than 100 3D printed components.
  • GM is spending $81 million to renovate part of its Global Engineering Center so it can build the Celestiq there itself. This will be the first production model born from the technology center, which has been in operation since 1956.

Cadillac’s first plug-in car was ELR, that’s not necessarily a success. The sleek luxury coupe with a plug-in-hybrid powertrain version from the Chevrolet Volt sold only about 3,000 units in its three-year life. ELR had a starting MSRP of $75,995 when it launched. Now, Cadillac is said to not mind raising the price even higher for its upcoming halo plug-in, the all-electric Celestiq.

Follow The Wall Street JournalThe Celestiq EV will cost around $300,000, with options likely to push the price “far beyond” that figure, the newspaper reported this week. To make an in-brand comparison, 2023 Cadillac Escalade-DRAW will start at around $150,000.

Understandably, General Motors hasn’t said anything about pricing yet, as the Celestiq is expected to arrive at the end of 2023 and the car won’t even be fully revealed until the end of July. Magazine based its valuation expectations on conversations with unnamed “people familiar with the matter”.

One reason for the solid six-figure cost is that GM is planning to make the Celestiq limited edition, with a plan to produce less than 500 copies.

Another reason Celestiq can be expensive is because it will be built by hand at GM’s Global Engineering Center in Warren, Michigan. When production begins, the Celestiq will be the first production vehicle out of the tech hub since it was founded in 1956. The center isn’t currently set up to build production vehicles, but GM has already built production vehicles. announced this week that it will spend $81 million to upgrade the center with the necessary equipment to set up a production line. GM said renovation work at the technology center campus has begun.

“Every [Celestiq] will be hand-built by an amazing team of craftsmen on the grounds of our historic Technical Center, and today’s investment announcement underscores our commitment to delivering a premium Cadillac. world with the best in craftsmanship, design, engineering and technology,” GM President Mark Reuss said in a statement.

Celestiq will have a lot of technology that certainly sounds expensive. GM has said the EV’s roof will be made of “suspended particle device smart glass” divided into quadrants so that each occupant can adjust how transparent part of their roof is. their own wishes. A column-to-column panel display and over 100 3D printed components will also be used in Celestiq. GM has begun using 3D printed components (also known as additive manufacturing) including gearshift symbols and gearbox parts in Cadillac CT4-DRAW and CT5-DRAW. GM manufactures these parts at the Additive Industrialization Center, which will open on its tech hub campus in 2020. The Celestiq EV will also come with the latest version of Ultra Cruise, an updated version of the support. GM’s hands-free highway driving assistance. Super Cruise software.

Despite all these moves, GM will use some frugal approach when it comes to Celestiq production. EV will use GM .’s Ultium Platform, which the automaker will also use in many all-electric models, including the GMC Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq and Chevy Silverado EV. Using this platform will allow GM to use parts in the Celestiq that it also uses in other Ultium models, including things like batteries and packages, engines, and integrated power electronics.
