In this series of articles, TDN reviews the remarkable successes of European studs in North America. This week’s column is marked by the victory of Secret Paris (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in the GIII Providencia S. in Santa Anita on Saturday.
City of Lights in Southern California
Strand Beach, LLC Secret Paris (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) won the Providencia S. for coach Phil D’Amato in his second U.S. start after finishing fourth at China Doll S. earlier this year, also at Santa Anita (videotapes).
The third foal and second winner for mother Cite Veron (Fr) (Tomorrow’s Cat), Paris Secret was bred by Al Mohamediya Breeding. She was sold for 8,500 euros as an avid Goffs Autumn for coach Andy Oliver, before entering the Galway maiden race for Paul Hardy last March.
Coolmore’s late Zoffany is the son of 5 US stake winners from 53 starters (9%), with Paris Secret being the fourth-place winner, along with GII Hollywood Turf Cup, Oscar winners Dominguez (Ire), and third place winners Zofelle (Ire) and Zoffarelli (Ire). He boasts 26 winners (49%) in this locality.
Adaay to remember in San Francisco
A GIII winner Bryan Station S. of Keeneland last fall, Balnikhov (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) captured GIII San Francisco Mile S. at Golden Gate on Saturday night (videotapes). Coached by Phil D’Amato, runner Little Red Feather Racing, Madaket Stables, LLC and Old Bones Racing Stables were included in the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile in March.
Bred by Thierry de La Heronniere and Gestut Zur Kuste AG, he brought in €27,000 as an annual September Arqana from Oceanic Bloodstock. Of his eight starts in France with two, he won three for Alain Jathiere, Ecurie Pandora Racing et. al. and coach Rod Collet, his previous relationships.
Among the winning Leeward (First Defense), the 4-year-old gelding is half-brother to the chubby 2-year-old L’Ardechoise (Fr) (El Kabeir), and the boy Almanzor (Fr) 2 lovely age. His second dam is the half-sister to GI Charles Whittingham Memorial H. Midships winner (Mizzen Mast).
Represented by only three US runners, Adaay also has GII hero San Gabriel S. Dicey Mo Chara (GB) named after him, and his third American runner, Good Day auspicious (Ire), won the G3 Prix de Cabourg.
Sloppy Surface Tricks for Dirty Helmets
by John O’Connor wild falcon (The {Aus} Helmet) enjoyed a sloppy surface at the Aqueduct for her graduation in her third game for Tom Albertrani on Saturday (videotapes).
In addition to Wadia (Ger) (Camphouse) who won once in Germany at the age of 3, Wildhawk is related to G1 Deutsches Derby hero Waldpark (Ger) (Dubawi {Ire}) and GI winner Man o’ War S. Wake Forest (Ger) (Sir Percy {GB}). The April foal was bred by Anastasie Astrid Christiansen-Croy in Kentucky. Haras d’Ombreville chose Wadia over Christiansen-Croy for €26,000 out of Arqana’s Vente d’Elevage carrying the winner in 2019. Following Wildhawk were three half-sisters – a minor named is Westphalia (Pride), a whirlwind named Whirlwind. (Always dreaming) and her mother gave birth to a pony Promise fulfilled ponies this spring.
Now based in Italy, Helmet has three winners out of nine runners-up (33%) in the US thanks to Wildhawk. Japanese male Darley ranked I three class I, Thunder Snow (Ire) is his top performer in the US
#5 WILDHAWK ($7.70) go wire-by-wire in the opener at the Aqueduct. Kendrick Carmouche is in a difficult position for Thomas Albertrani.
