INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Colts run again Jonathan Taylor start left, see two New England Patriots defender and cut to the right and take off. Taylor, at one point during Saturday’s encounter run, looked back at the defenders the same way he should look at the rest of the NFL MVP contenders.
That’s because in a time when quarterbacks often dominate the MVP race, Taylor is trying to race her way to the individual prize pool.

Unfortunately for Taylor and the Colts, running back is not a regular MVP-winning position. The honor usually goes to the midfielder, who has won 8 games in a row and 12 games before. Adrian Peterson in 2012 was the last non-winger to win the award.
Taylor leads the NFL in several categories, including dashing yards (1,518), rush touchdowns (17) and total touchdowns (19) this season. The last three run back to win the prize – Peterson, LaDainian Tomlinson and Shaun Alexander – all dashed at least 1,800 yards.
Taylor will have to average about 100 yards in the last three Colts games (The Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars) to hit that mark, and he’ll have an extra game advantage that the others don’t.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if he gets past it as he has dashed for at least 100 yards in five of the past six games.
“I’ve been saying he’s been the MVP for six weeks now,” ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky said of Taylor. “One hundred yards a battle, 5.5 gills. He has more touchdowns than games played. Everyone knew he was going to run on the rock. Everyone pointed at [Tennessee Titans running back] Derrick Henry last year. Well, no quarterback has thrown 48 touchdowns this year. I think Jonathan Taylor is the MVP.”
Orlovsky mentions Henry because in 2020, the Titans ran back for 2,027 yards, which is very difficult to do, but still didn’t get any votes. Midfielder Aaron Rodgers, who won the award, Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes get them all.
Taylor’s Biggest Competition for Prizes this season seems to be Rodgers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers midfielder brave cat and Mahomes.
What makes Taylor’s season so impressive is that he delivered those numbers with disapproval knowing the Colts would give him the ball.
Taylor sealed the Colts’ win over New England in Week 15 with that 67-yard touchdown in the final minutes, as the Patriots piled up boxes to try to stop him. Taylor hit a total of 170 yards when rushing into the game against New England.
“There are about 11 people up,” midfielder Carson Wentz speak. “Everybody in the building knew we were running the ball. We had the best return run in the league, and he missed two people in the hole; it was just JT was JT. Bring it home and no one caught him.”
The team’s success will likely affect the race. Thirteen of the previous 16 MVPs belonged to the teams that were rated as the top seeds in their games. Fifteen of the past 16 teams belonged to the teams that were one of the top two seeds. Colts (8-6) is now fifth seed in AFC playoff race. Rodgers and Mahomes are in the No. 1 seed group in the NFC and AFC respectively, with Brady and Tampa sitting at the 3rd seed position in the NFC.
There’s no denying Taylor’s impact on the game. He has dashed for at least 100 yards eight times this season.
