Canada prepares to unveil plan for North America’s aging defences amid warnings on Norad – National
High expectations in the position of Defense Minister Anita Anand is about to announce a federal government plan to upgrade North America’s aging defenses.
Notice at a Ontario Monday morning’s airbase comes amid warnings from US and Canadian military officials and experts about the state of Norad, especially in the context of Russiainvasion of Ukraine.
Anand has been promising for months that the government is considering a strong investment package for NoradJoint command system tasked with detecting air and sea threats to North America.
Those promises were renewed earlier this month, when Anand and the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Norad’s headquarters in Colorado, though neither gave any specifics at the time.
The government says some of the $8 billion in new military funding in April’s federal budget will go to Norad, which is expected to include a new long-range radar system capable of detecting threats coming from the Arctic.
Anand also said last month that the government was considering whether Canada should finally join the US in actively defending against intercontinental ballistic missiles, which it refused to do last month. 2005 or not.
