Canelo Alvarez must change coaches to beat Bivol says Oscar De La Hoya
Via Sean Jones: Oscar De La Hoya says the only way Canelo Alvarez can beat Dmitry Bivol in their rematch is if he warms up his longtime coach Eddy Reynoso and go with someone who can work with his feet.
We still have a way to go before Canelo needs to worry about rematching WBA lightweight champion Bivol again.
Alvarez will face 40-year-old Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17th and it is believed he fought the fight because it was easier to win.
Canelo’s flat-footed fighting style may not change, and his giving Reynoso a walking paper in the hope that his new coach will lighten his legs.
I don’t want to say it, but drumming Reynoso out of the Canelo gym could help with very little of the flaws in his game. It will put the problem down the road for some other trainer to try and deal with without success.
Canelo’s flaws have been around since day one. He’s not on a double-digit loss as careful and controversial mind-bending decisions have kept him out of at least five more over the years.
Oscar feels that Reynoso is the root of Canelo’s problems, which only came to light after his recent humiliating loss to Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) on May 7.
De La Hoya thinks swapping Reynoso for a new coach will improve Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) enough that he can beat Bivol.
Not only was Canelo lacking in footwork that Reynoso failed to address. Canelo’s cardio is poor, and his style of going forward with a tall guard will get him into all sorts of trouble when he eventually starts to battle the quality 168-pounder.ike David Benavidez and David Morrell Jr.
“Fighting style unless Canelo changes coaches and moves his legs better,” Oscar De La Hoya told Fighthype about what Canelo must do to defeat Bivol in a rematch.
The ONLY reason Canelo has moved away from his flat-footed fighting style is that he has faced mostly paper champions and flawed boxers since his controversial win over Gennadiy Golovkin in 2018.

Canelo has been with Reynoso since day one, so it’s probably not realistic for him to give him the royal boot like Anthony Joshua did with his longtime coach Rob McCracken recently.
We still don’t know if Joshua’s change of coach will benefit him, but it will likely be a defeat of the worst kind.
Interestingly, De La Hoya is advocating for a change of coach for Canelo because he has to realize that no coach alive can fix the Mexican star’s sluggish legs.
Does De La Hoya honestly believe Canelo can beat Bivol with the help of a new coach, or is he just saying this to boost his confidence?
“I think Canelo is too flat-footed for someone like Bivolwho uses his head and his wits, because if you look at Canelo’s losses, which was only to Mayweather and Bivol.
“He [Canelo] lost because his footwork and the others were light-footed, and he was too heavy on his feet.
“If he changes coaches, he’ll beat Bivol,De La Hoya said, making it clear that Canelo should get rid of Eddy Reynoso.
