Cardiff City lose CAS case, ordered to pay Nantes for player’s transfer fee
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has said Cardiff City must pay Nantes the first of the agreed transfer fee to Emiliano Sala before the Argentine striker’s death, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said today. Friday after rejecting an appeal from the Championship club.
Sala’s plane crashed in the English Channel, killing him and the pilot as he arrived in Cardiff after signing a contract for 17 million euros in January 2019 from the French side.
The 28-year-old’s body was recovered nearly three weeks later after an underwater search found wreckage.
Cardiff appealed against a FIFA’s decision to ask them to pay His first transfer fee amounted to 6 million euros.
“The challenging decision in which Cardiff City was ordered to pay €6 million to FC Nantes in connection with the transfer of player Emiliano Sala between clubs,” CAS said.
“The CAS Panel finds that the transfer of the player from Nantes to Cardiff City has been completed.
“Because the conditions set out in the Transfer Agreement were fulfilled prior to the player’s death, Nantes’ claim for the first-time transfer fee was upheld.”
Nantes welcomed the decision, saying they were “delighted” that the years-long procedure was finally over.
CAS added that the proceedings only concern the first transfer fee of the total 17 million euros agreed.
CAS added: “The other sections are not due at the time of the proceedings prior to the FIFA cases.
“The CAS committee also confirmed that FIFA was not amusing Cardiff City’s claim that it did not pay any transfer fees to Nantes.”
