“I think my first trip to Hawaii was a vacation in Kauai,” mused Carolyn Murphy. “I was immediately captivated by the greenery and lush tropical land — as if I could see and feel the breath of the earth.” This is a confession shared by her design partners. Today, right on International Surfing Day, the surf-loving and environmental-loving supermodel will debut Surf’s Up, her second high-end collection with Lela Becker and Tim Kaeding of Los Angeles-based denim brand Mother. This is also 60% Mother’s third release, signifying the brand’s collections are primarily made of vintage and second-hand textiles.
For the 12-piece capsule, which includes patchwork tapestries ponchos, Hawaiian shirts, ribbed panties, and a beach jacket, Murphy found the ideal contemplative look in three uncles. hers, who flew between Hawaii and California in the 1970s chasing the waves. You have collaborated with many brands, from Shinola to Adeam. What lessons did you learn from each? How have you approached your work with Mother differently — or not?
What I’ve learned from the different collaborations I’ve done is that a lot of work goes into a single category. The design process has many layers, but the end goal is to create something that people want and you take pride in when you put your name on it. It’s all about teamwork and that goes for any brand. This second collection with Mom is as heartfelt as the first as we are excited about the collaboration and use of high-tech garments. It feels like a responsible and exciting challenge we have for ourselves and the fashion community: lead by example. I love the ease and fun of what we’ve created both times, and the agreement to the laid-back American style.
You seem to have a great eye for design, whether it’s fashion or interiors. Where do you think that comes from?
I’ll credit my nana for my eye in design and interiors — she’s classy and an artist. I have also traveled abroad since I was a child, and in my career I have been exposed to different people, cultures and destinations, which has influenced and developed my personal style. mine. It all comes down to how I thrive on inspiration and creativity.
“Sustainability” is a scary word for some, who may not know how or where to start. What does sustainability mean to you and what are some of your sustainability practices?
I find it intimidating to be labeled or claimed anything around sustainability. We live in a world where talking is a complete fantasy for most people, but adapting to simple lifestyle choices is one way to start. Buying used — whether it’s cars, clothes, or furniture — is a great starting point for recycling. Reuse items like bags and glass jars. Reduce waste by shopping at farmers markets, composting your kitchen waste and skipping single-use plastics.
Many items in the collection are upgraded. Aside from sustainability, what about classic appeals to you?
Vintage is fascinating because the hunt for pieces can be surprising; there’s a history around most garments and the challenge of remaking them is fun.
When did you start surfing, and what is the importance of surfing in your life?
I started surfing continuously in my twenties, but since I come from a family of surfers and grew up around the water, it was only a matter of time. I’ve always loved the surfing and skating culture (boys too). My three uncles live in California and surf Rincon, and it dictates their lifestyle, which I’ve always wanted. My uncle Bob has designed logos for OP, Hang Ten, Lightning Bolt and other big brands. He unfortunately passed away a few years ago, but already such a legend. His best friend is Mark Richards, and he dated the Duke. He would show me pictures and tell stories about their travels. I’ve always longed for that freedom, and once I tasted it in Costa Rica in 1998, that’s it!
Describe your perfect Hawaiian day and what Mom items would bring you there.
My perfect Hawaiian day starts with golden sunrises, fruit platters, roosters crowing, yoga, windsurfing and surfing — specifically, going windsurfing with my girlfriends in Oahu. An afternoon beach day in Kona’s Waipio Valley or Hanalei on Kauai, followed by some exploration — I love hiking the Nepal Coast or sailing along the coast, stopping for a swim in between. the ocean — and gather with friends and family at night, perhaps over fish cakes or fish sandwiches at Mermaid Café.
