Children affected by conflict cannot wait for their education |
ECW provides affected children and youth with the opportunity to learn for free – safely and without fear – to develop and reach their full potential.
A journey and a dream
Just nine years old, Bchiote Moorice and her three younger brothers fled the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) – without food, water or necessities.
After a difficult escape, Bchiote and her siblings were reunited with their parents, and the whole family moved to a refugee camp in western Ethiopia.
There, Bchiote and her brothers were finally able to focus on their studies through ECW. sponsor program by UNICEF Ethiopia.
“I hope to go to college a year from now and work in a big corporate bank,” she said with a big smile.
Determination for education
Launched to transform a support system that abandoned millions of the most vulnerable children and young people, ECW has been able to help many boys and girls like Bchiote.
Shahd (not her real name), like many 11-year-olds her age, have big dreams. She wants to be president, or a doctor, or even the first Palestinian female astronaut.
But, forced to spend most of her days in treatment at Augusta Victoria Hospital, her chronic kidney disease hovered around her like a dark rain cloud.
However, Shahd was able to continue his education at Define field – get closer to making her dreams come true.
ECW sponsored yes be activated The Palestinian Ministry of Education established four Schools of Determination, providing a flexible educational program for children unable to attend regular classes because of a chronic illness and long-term treatment.
About 150 students in Palestine are currently being provided with individualized plans, psychosocial support and inclusive education to ensure they do not fall behind in their studies.
“I would rather go to a regular school with other kids, but the teachers and nurses at the hospital are very kind and they make it okay,” said Shahd.
Endurance, friendship, potential
On the last day of school before the holidays, three inseparable friends in Chad share a bond of change and resilience.
Hadje Al-Hadj, Achta Dogo and Ngoleram Abakar, attended Kaya Primary School in the Lac province of Chad, and lived in an area for displaced people due to ongoing violence in the Lake Chad Region.
It was created in 2015 following attacks from the terrorist group Boko Haram. Violence and recurring threats have forced more than 450,000 internally displaced people and refugees to Lac Province.
Hadje was only 5 years old when her family moved there from a neighboring country. Now 11, through the program, she has been able to focus on her studies and thrive, along with 500 other students from the Kaya website.
These students, and other young people at Kaya Primary School in Lac Province, were able to access a safe, quality learning environment – keeping their dreams and future alive.
