China’s EV supercars are starting to emerge with wild performance claims
September 2022 we reported That Chinese brand Aion (a part of GAC Corporation) unveiled the Hyper SSR electric supercar, boasting a peak power of 900 kW and a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of just 1.9 seconds.
It is touted as China’s first supercar and will set new standards in performance and production technology.
Now, the automaker that produces more than 2.4 million cars a year for the Chinese market alone, has released more fascinating information and figures about the Hyper SSR.
These should set off alarm bells for high-performance brands like Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and even Tesla, which have yet to produce the much-anticipated second-generation Roadster.
After internal performance testing in mid-December 2022, GAC’s Aion said its Hyper SSR EV rocket is expected to begin rolling off the production line in October 2023.
Translating the source material, the performance is absolutely said to surpass many V12 engines.
There’s a world-first two-speed ‘four-in-one’ electric drive motor developing the claimed head-turning 12,000Nm at the wheels (another measure to read typical motor/motor torque – Ed) with 1.7G traction, in addition to a capacity of 900kW.
At this stage, we are told it uses one engine at each wheel, is said to weigh less than 50kg each.
The electric motor power density is rated at 3.87kW/kg, while achieving an efficiency of 94.5%. It also has a maximum electric motor operating speed of 22,000 rpm, while the second-generation Tesla Roadster (if it is built) is said to have a speed of 21,000 rpm.
According to the GAC Aion source document, the Hyper SSR’s electric motor uses a patented X-Pin design, adapted from space technology and advanced materials to provide structural integrity.
Despite operating a two-speed gearbox (like the Porsche Taycan), the Hyper SSR boasts beautiful millisecond shifts without losing power between shifts.
The vehicle operates on a high-voltage 900V+ SiC (Wolfspeed Silicon carbide) architecture adapted from high-speed rail, delivering 80% lower power consumption and a 2.5x increase in frequency.
That’s what we know so far, but GAC Aion says it will release more specs in 2023. That’s certainly exciting and if it achieves all that said, well Next-generation EV performance is really just around the corner.
It is also not the first Chinese supercar discussed this year. New BYD to the Australian market, now selling the popular Atto 3, recently revealed Yangwang U9 electric coupeclaims a sprint speed of 0-100 km/h in two seconds flat.
The GAC Aion is yet to launch in Australia but is supposed to launch here late 2023/2024, but like BYD with the U8, there are no firm plans to offer the Hyper SSR EV here.
