Beijing:

A Chinese couple stuck in a near-ending day thanks to the virus lockdown was relieved to find that love, not the coronavirus, was in the air and had agreed to marry.

This is the second time this month that China’s state media has published a report of a dating couple stuck by the abrupt lockdown rules – but this has a happy ending. than.

Zhao Xiaoqing, a 28-year-old woman from northern China’s Shaanxi province, thinks her mid-December date with a young man living in another city will be just a one-day affair, where she will also get to know his family.

Chinese youth in smaller cities and rural communities often rely on family and friends to recommend potential matches and possibly meet their date’s family at the same time.

“I never thought of staying overnight, because it was quite awkward,” Zhao Xiaoqing, who just met the man for the second time, told local media Jimu News on Monday.

But authorities in the city of Xianyang where she was dating suddenly ordered a lockdown due to a spike in virus infections, making it impossible for the woman to return home.

The man’s parents urged the couple to get engaged after just a week together – but Zhao said she felt it was “too hasty.”

Zhao said she was “not too excited” when she first saw a photo of the man – named Zhao Fei – but then thought he looked better in real life.

Despite the awkward beginning, the couple developed feelings for each other and have now decided to get engaged.

“We get along very well,” Zhao Xiaoqing, an online apple trader, told Jimu News.

“I had to livestream to sell apples at his house, but no matter how late, he was always by my side. I was very touched by this,” she said.

“Our souls are compatible, we are very compatible and both our parents are happy,” she said.

The story captures the imagination of the online audience.

But while some are overwhelmed by the relentless march of fate, others warn of hasty decisions.

One wrote: “After a year or two, you get bored and get divorced… I’ve seen too many flash marriages like this.

“Sister, think clearly about this,” warned another.

Zhao’s story went viral on Chinese social media just days after another couple appeared in the headlines. stuck in a week-long blind day thanks to Covid lockdown.

Wang, a woman in central China’s Henan province, has been trapped in her suitor’s apartment since going out for a home-cooked meal on their first date in early January.

But romance has yet to blossom for Wang, who has complained her date talks as much as a “wooden dummy”.
