Chris Colbert Says He Will Fight Frank Martin This Year
Via Chris Williams: Chris Colbert says a fight between him and boxer Errol Spence Frank Martin will happen this year around September or October and he will beat him at lightweight.
Colbert (16-1, 6 KOs), who fights at 130, said he will put on weight and face 27-year-old Martin (16-0, 12 KOs) at 135 for the bout. Later, Colbert said he would decide to keep the lightweight or move down to the featherweight super-weapon to claim a world title.
Colbert was on the verge of a disappointing 12-round decisive loss to Hector Luis Garcia last February.
Chris was scheduled to challenge 130-lb WBA champion Roger Gutierrez for his title, but he had to withdraw due to battling COVID-19.
Hector Garcia (15-0, 10 KOs) replaced him and created an upset with a decisive 12 innings win over Colbert. Garcia knocked out Colbert in game seven and won by scores of 119-108, 118-109 and 118-109.
“I did the unexpected. I die-a** seriously,” Chris Colbert told Fighthype when asked how serious he is about fighting lightweight Frank Martin. “I don’t talk too much on social media unless I know it’s going to happen. It will happen.
“I will go up to 135,” Colbert said when told that Frank Martin fights at 135 [lightweight]. “I don’t know yet; we’ll see,” Colbert said when asked if it was a ‘one-off’ for him to switch to lightweight for a bout against Martin.
“After this outstanding performance [against Martin], we’ll see how this plays out. I really dominate people in my mind. My Last Fight [against Hector Luis Garcia] was a glitch with my body and myself, and I paid for the course, right?
“Now it’s time for me to go back and do what they thought I couldn’t do. So they can know that it’s not for nothing. He is a good fighter.
“He’s actually a boxer, but I see flaws that I can exploit, and that’s what I’ll do when the day comes,” Colbert said of Martin.
“I don’t know what he’s good at. He is a good fighter. That’s what I can say. He’s a good boxer, and someday, we’ll see who’s the better boxer.
“He did well,” Colbert said when asked about his thoughts on Frank Martin’s tenth-round knockout win over Jackson Marinez last Saturday night. “He is a bit tired, but that comes with the sport.
“But he really did well and dominated the kid as he had to to get him out there.
“When I beat him. Back where I belong, and then I make a decision if I go back to 130 for the belt and then defend it a few times and go up to 135,” Colbert said when asked about the win. Frank made him.
“It was scary for a lot of people,” Colbert said of a possible clash between him and Martin. “No, I just saw him on TV; let’s make it happen. I like that kind of ***. Errol Spence is his promoter, and that’s what he has to do,” Colbert said when asked about his thoughts on Errol Spence Jr actively pushing Martin to fight against him.
“Honestly, I like it when a boxer has a big backing. Errol Spence is a big backer. Like Errol Spence and I said. We’ll bet 100k, and we’ll see who wins. I got 100 thousand dollars for myself.
“No, not at all,” Colbert said when asked if he felt respected by the way he was called. “Me and Errol Spence have a history. I’ve said what I’ve said about him, but I always come back to the conclusion that he’s a great fighter.
“No, he is not a talkative person. I know the child is not a talkative person. I’m not one to talk much on social media. I waited until we met in person, and then we talked. Until then, it’s all good sportsmanship, and when it comes to the fight, as I said to Errol Spence, ‘I’m hungry right now, man.
“I am hungry and taxes are approaching. I’m just practicing. That will happen fight, but I’m ready. Yeah sure. In my next fight,” Colbert said when asked if he believes the fight with Frank Martin will happen in 2022.
“This year I come back in September or October. He will become a guy. I already told you. I will defeat him. it will be an easy fight.
“I’m going to make it look easy, and then people will want to fight Frank Martin. No one wants to fight Frank Martin right now. Then people will want to fight him,” said Colbert.
