Chromebook shipments declined globally in Q4; Acer overtakes HP, Lenovo to become top player: IDC
According to a report, worldwide Chromebook shipments fell more than 60% year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2021, although shipments continued to grow throughout the year. All the leading players in the global Chromebook market – from Acer and Dell to Lenovo and Samsung – recorded negative year-on-year growth in the quarter as demand for Chromebooks continued to decline in the US. Market intelligence company International data company (IDC) said in it report that Chromebooks Global shipments fell 63.6% year-on-year in the fourth quarter to 4.8 million units – down from 13.1 million units shipped in the same quarter of 2020.
“Much of the initial demand for Chromebooks has been met in key markets like the US and Europe, and the rest of the world,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research director at IDC’s Mobile and Consumer Device Tracker. Samsung and HP are the other two vendors on the list of the top five Chromebook manufacturers. While Samsung saw Samsung’s Q4 growth drop 22.4%, HP faced the steepest drop of 31.8%.
As reported by IDC, HP rose to fifth place in the fourth quarter from first place in the market in the same quarter of 2020 due to the fact that it shipped 0.5 million Chromebooks.

According to IDC, for the full year of 2021, worldwide Chromebook shipments increased to 37 million units from 32.6 million units registered in 2020. The increase in shipments resulted in a growth of 13.5 over with the same period last year.

Just like Chromebooks, worldwide tablet shipments in Q4 2021 fell 11.9% year-on-year to 46 million units from 52.2 million units recorded in the same quarter of 2020.
Despite the drop, Apple IDC said it still maintained its market leadership position when it shipped 17.5 million units in the quarter, accounting for 38% of the market share. However, year-on-year growth in iPad shipments from the Cupertino giant fell 8.6%.
Samsung ranked second with 7.3 million tablets shipped in the quarter, helping to capture a market share of 15.9%. The report noted that the company saw a significant 21.6% drop in year-over-year growth in its shipments.
