Classic WIRED Covers—Regenerated by AI

“The visual archive that DALL-E pulls from feels like one of the worst repositories I’ve ever seen in terms of visual linguistic and cultural diversity. When trying to create my work, certain words and phrases do not return reasonable results. For example, when searching for ‘women with box braids’, the first result is white women with loose braids. When trying to explore the concept of digital black faces, it is not necessary to add ‘white’ or ‘white’ to the search terms because that is already the assumed default, even when searching for categories and topics dedicated to Black culture.
Reminder example: “round earrings”, “smiling mouth with mesh”, “white hand with super long fingernails pointing”
Sam Cannon, Photographer
“DALL-E has an impressive dataset to pull from, but I’m really pleased with the fact that, despite the 650 million image/caption pairs it uses to create the images, it does cannot display a close copy of mine. cover. While there is no problem creating images with similar elements (needle, hand, pill) and mimicking the overall style (dark environment, harsh light from above), the the abstract idea of a hand pushing through a pin screen is beyond its reach…for now.”
Reminder example: “3D rendering of a character holding his head pierced by thousands of needles, octane, harsh light”
Patrick Savile, Designer and Illustrator
“It was difficult to achieve what I wanted initially, so I shifted the concept around a bit until I was able to get an image that closely resembled the idea in my head, which turned out to be egg-based. .”
Reminder example: “Highly detailed brush drawing of a cracked egg containing clouds, storm clouds in the background, shimmering, high contrast psychedelic colors, masao saito, Michael whelan, hajime sorayama, high resolution”
