Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has made India proud, once again by winning the country’s first gold medal at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games. She lifted a total of 201 kg to win gold in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event. Overjoyed with her victory, Chanu summed up her efforts in a social media post saying: “Lifting 201kg has never been easy but thanks to the love and desire of billions of villagers. At home, every challenge is just an effort.” Meanwhile, Mauritius’s Roilya Ranaivosoa took silver and Canada’s Hannah Kaminsky took bronze. Mirabai Chanu is one of the most famous weightlifters in India. Posting her CWG 2022 win, fans flooded the Twitter timeline to congratulate her. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, “@mirabai_chanu especially makes India proud again! Every Indian is delighted that she has won the Gold Medal and set a new Commonwealth record at the Olympics. Birmingham. Her success inspires some Indians, especially beginner athletes.” Among others who have won India’s award at CWG 2022 in Birmingham are Sanket Sargar, Bindyarani Devi, Gururaja Poojary, all in the weightlifting events.
