Trainer Bill Mott's barn sent out a pair of Classic entrants on Thursday morning, including GII Wood Memorial winners Emily Bushnell & Ric Waldman resilience (Into Mischief) with runner-up GI Ashland S. by George Krikorian Just letting you know (justification) return to the work tab to continue preparing for the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Kentucky Oaks.
The duo started work together at 7:30 a.m. ET after galloping about a mile. Defending filly juvenile champion Just FYI worked on the outside of Resilience and started a length behind. By the quarter pole, Just FYI had moved a length ahead of Resilience but judging by the wire, the duo finished together. Resilience, who covered four furlongs in a time of :50.2, completed his five-furlong gallop in 1:02.80 while Just FYI went four furlongs in :50 flat, galloped in 1:03.40, according to John Nichols of Churchill Downs.
“I was thinking [Resilience] had a great trip at Wood Memorial,” Mott said. “I thought Johnny [Velazquez] Riding him was great. He may have been stuck a bit in the first turn but managed to get out the back. When asked, he answered and did well. The best part is that he looks really good visually.
Resilience is missing from Meadowsweet (Smart Strike), a daughter of MGISW Tranquility Lake (Rahy) and a half-sister to Grade I scorers Courageous Cat (Storm Cat) and After Market (Storm Cat) .
“The whole family of this horse has been very successful on the track. Part of the family is Brave Cat, who I trained to a Grade I winner [in the Shoemaker Mile]. The owners have been in the livestock business for a long time and Resilience is just a result of their program.”
Resilience was nurtured in Kentucky by Pam and the late Marty Wygod, Bushnell's parents. This will be the first start in the Kentucky Derby for the Wygod family along with Waldman, a longtime partner of the Wygods.
