CPL 2023: Phil Simmons Appointed Head Coach of Trinbago Knight Riders
Phil Simmons has been announced as the head coach of the four-time CPL champion Knights of Trinbago (TKR), ahead of the upcoming season of Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2023) starting in August.
Speaking about the development, said Kieron Pollard, TKR captain “As captain, I am delighted to have coach Phil with us. We have great chemistry working together as a couple. We’ve done that internationally and it’s great that we have the opportunity to work for TKR. Hopefully this combination will bring smiles and some interesting results for TKR.”
Venky Mysore, TKR Team Manager added, “We are delighted to have Coach Phil Simmons with TKR. He is highly respected and his knowledge of domestic as well as foreign players and emerging young talents makes him an ideal choice for TKR.”
CPL 2023 is scheduled to take place from August 16 to September 24 in Saint Lucia, St Kitts & Nevis, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana.
Trinbago Knight Riders will play their first match CPL 2023 against the Patriotic Team of St. Kitts & Nevis at Daren Sammy Stadium in St. Lucia on August 19.
Phil Simmons’ career
Simmons, who played for the West Indies from 1987 to 1999 as the opening hitter and mid-speeder, representing them in three World Cups, was one of the coaches. Most respected trainer in the region.
After retiring, Simmons had two terms as head coach of the West Indies (2015–2016 and 2019–2022), along with roles coaching Zimbabwe (2004–2005), Ireland (2007–2015) and Afghanistan (2017) – 2019).
