Via Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Danny Jacobs (37-3, 30 KOs) takes on John Ryder (30-5.17 KOs) in a WBA super-middleweight match on DAZN this Saturday, May 12th. 2 at Alexandra Palace, Muswell Hill, in London, England.
If Jacobs defeats Ryder, he will be Mandatory WBA for Canelo Alvarezwhich means he will be in a position to challenge him in an immediate rematch.
Jacobs says the rematch against Canelo Alvarez will be different this time because of him NOT ALLOWED be drained weight.
Jacobs was 100% less than the last time he played Canelo in 2019 as he needed to drain down to 160 and deal with his rehydration limit the next day.
It was difficult for Jacobs to gain weight in the first place, but then having to keep the weight low for the second check-in left him exhausted.
Jacobs, 35, hopes to beat Ryder and use the win to land him in a title against undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo, who holds all four belts at 168.
It’s not certain that Jacobs will rematch Canelo because the Mexican star is in superb form for 2022 with the two-match deal he is expected to sign with DAZN.
Jacobs tells Canelo he won’t burn out
Danny looks weak after weighing himself up for his fight with Canelo in 2019, and you can tell he’s made it through hell on earth through the challenge.
“I disagree 100% because no one can dictate my career. I’ve been in control of my career since I first turned pro, but I understand how important it is for people to mean that,” Jacobs told media when asked if it would be a long road back to the top for the loser in the fight with John Ryder this Saturday.
“I think I will have a different physical body,” Jacobs said when asked what would be different in the rematch against Canelo if he got one. I will have a physical advantage because I will not lose weight.
“I had to go through a lot to make 160-lbs, and that’s why I got promoted. Who knows what the future has in store. Like I said, all I have to focus on is Saturday night, and then I can focus on those things.
“That’s why every game you go out there and try and give your best,” Jacobs continued.
“But most importantly for me, when I have a list of fighters to choose from, John Ryder is one of them. I jumped into it because I knew he was going to come forward and give it his all. He’s not going to run away,” Jacobs said.
It’s not clear who the other names were given to Jacobs for this bout, but interestingly the name he chose was approved by the WBA for that title type person.
Rematch with Canelo is what Danny wants
“Sure, I think anyone would be interested in the match, let alone a rematch with someone of that nature,” Jacobs said when asked if he would like a rematch with Canelo. or not.
“Canelo is one of the best boxers of our generation. So for me in a different weight class [168] and 100% healthy. Come on a Saturday night, first you will see, and then the sky is the limit.
“The fights I learned the most from were probably some of the fights I didn’t look my best. Maybe some fights where I don’t like the other person.
“Probably some of the fights where I put my mental focus together outside the ring. So that’s why I love sports. I will show you what you need to do.
“It will let you see based on your performance what you need to do. It may not even be physical. It could be up here[mental].
“My prediction is fireworks. That’s all I’m saying, ‘Fireworks.’ However, the victory came because I saw my hand raised at the end of the night. So however that comes, I’ll be happy. I just wanted to give the fans a good performance,” Jacobs said.
If Canelo decides he doesn’t want to give Jacobs a rematch, he will be forced to vacate his WBA title next year. Jacobs will then be selected as the new WBA champion or ordered to play against the highest-ranked candidate.
Hall of Fame for Daniel?
“He understood this was going to work against me and that’s what you want,” Jacobs said. “You want someone who will give their all and give their all to a good performance.
“I am back in the happy space with my team, everyone gives me that spark again. Boxing is more mental than physical. Even as a seasoned veterinarian, there is something you can learn about the sport. I love sports.
“It always taught me things about myself in and out of the ring. So now that everything is back in full swing, I’m not just trying to prove to my fans and to myself that I have what it takes.
“I have goals and aspirations not only to be world champion, but to reach the Hall of Fame myself,” says Jacobs. “That’s my ultimate goal.”
It’s still early for Jacobs to talk about the Hall of Fame. There’s still a lot for Jacob to achieve before he starts talking about reaching the Hall.
Ryder is not on Jacobs’ radar
“So games like this mean a lot because it puts me in the position of being a two-time champion and among the greats of my generation when all told,” Jacobs said. and done,” Jacobs said.
Jacobs said of Ryder “He was not in my sights. I feel he will still be a worthy opponent and worthy of a fight.
“The first time he understood me was the battle with Callum Smith. I still don’t think it’s possible for us to fight because how many times can you fight the southern fishes in your entire career?
“So I’m looking forward to putting it to work and, most importantly, giving the fans a good performance,” Jacobs said. “What would be the difference [between him and Ryder]. I would say the element of experience, strength, speed and IQ,” said Danny.
You can understand why Ryder isn’t on Jacobs’ radar as he’s not as popular in the US and there are arguably better contenders out there.
Any fight makes sense
“I wouldn’t say there are any specific names. I’m any fight that makes sense,” Jacobs said when asked who specifically he wants to face next if he gets past Ryder this Saturday night.
“You can always, throughout your career, want to fight this guy or that guy. You called them out, and to no avail. So for me personally, what makes it so important to me is to get to my final destination of the Hall of Fame.
“I’m not sure what the plan is for anyone other than myself,” Jacobs said. “My goal is Saturday night, to get the net out, show the fans that ‘Miracle Man’ is back, and then move forward,” Jacobs said.
