Via Craig Page: Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz said David Benavidez will fight WBA super-middleweight champion David Morrell in May or June, as long as the Cuban wins next Saturday night’s bout against Aidos Yerbossynuly on November 5.
Lewkowicz says they have a contract for Benavidez (26-0.23 KOs) to take on the undefeated Morrell (7-0.6 KOs). 24-year-old Morrell will defend against Yerbossynuly (16-0, 11 KOs) undefeated on Showtime at The Armory, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
According to Lewkowicz, Benavidez’s planned fight against former IBF 168-lb champion Jose Uzcategui in January is still ongoing, as there are a number of “issues” that need to be taken care of.
When asked about whether a fight between Benavidez and Caleb Plant was possible, Sampson sounded less confident about it going.
Morrell is said to be a more talented fighter than Plant, but he is not as well known as he is. Though it’s been an uphill fight, Benavidez won’t get as much attention against him as Plant, famous for his battles against Canelo Alvarez, Anthony Dirrell, and Uzcategui.

“With David Morrell, we have a contract. If he wins, we will fight Benavidez in May or June. He is [Morrell] must win his fight next week [against Aidos Yerbossynuly], and if he wins that game, chances are we’ll play David Benavidez in May or June, and that’s a fact. It’s very close to being done.
“Sometimes you need courage to fight David Benavidez, and Morrell has it,” Lewkowicz said when asked why Benavidez didn’t fight Caleb Plant. “He doesn’t care what the manager says. I’m sure Plant and others are willing to fight for the right price.
“I will be meeting Eddy Reynoso and Canelo next month in Acapulco. Maybe Elvis Presley will help. Canelo will fight anyone. Eddy Reynoso didn’t want that. He fought 15 of them. Maybe he got tired,” Lewkowicz said when asked about his thoughts on Canelo not fighting the Mexican boxer.
“Plants will be a good fight. I believe he will be equal or better than Morrell, but it will definitely be pay-per-view. With Morrell, it won’t be pay-per-view because not many people know Morrell’s qualifications. It was a very dangerous war.
“He has to, but we’ll see what happens. We have some issues to deal with,” Lewkowicz said when asked to confirm whether Benavidez will face Jose Uzcategui in January.
