Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws reported that the boy’s remains were found in an abandoned area of Neeltje Jans, a man-made island with an amusement park in the Dutch province of Zeeland that is very popular with tourists. The site is about 60 miles from Verberckmoes’ home in Sint Niklass, across the Belgian border.

As search efforts intensified and an Amber Alert was issued in the Netherlands, the boy’s mother, Elke Verberckmoes, directly pleaded with his captor to bring him back.
“I try to stay strong, but I’m really scared. All I want now is to be reunited with my little apple. Maybe put it at the door and then drive away, but take my son home,” she was quoted as saying by HLN.
She recalls that the last words he said to her, as he waved goodbye, were: “Hi mom, I’ll miss you.”
