Arkane Studios has officially confirmed that Deathloop takes place in the future of the universe first built in the game Dishonored.
This confirmation was made by Deathloop director and Arkane Lyon studio director Dinga Bakaba, who appeared on Official Xbox Podcast with studio director Arkane Austin, Harvey Smith.
Xbox’s Jeff Rubenstein asked Bakaba about the rumors and suggested that Deathloop has a connection to this larger universe. While Rubenstein says he doesn’t need to confirm anything, Bakaba goes above and beyond and not only confirms that this is true, but he also discusses the thought process behind making it so.
“Not everyone sees the same thing,” Bakaba said of Deathloop. “Not everyone has heard the same song that you may have heard somewhere. Not everyone has seen every room, and so on, and so forth. So it’s been fun for the community to review the clues. little termites that we had scattered everywhere. , actually, we envisioned Deathloop happening in the future after [Dishonored 2’s standalone expansion] The Death of the Outsider. “
Bakaba said the team didn’t want to make this connection too obvious and one-sided because they wanted Deathloop to have a story and identity of its own, but that doesn’t mean they can’t use the game to explore. things. will take place after the event of Death of the Outsider.
“When we did Deathloop, we said, hey, [this story] It could be one of the following things [Death of the Outsider.] So we have a certain timeline to link that to, and there are a lot of clues, really, in the game,” said Bakaba. There’s some abuse, one of which is really spoiler-y, so be it, but there’s a lot of little things and some things are always on people’s radar, but people are just learning it. “
One of these references can be seen on the handgun known as the Heritage Rifle. This weapon has a logo on the side of it that is not clearly visible until recent Goldenloop update added “takes a break when the character plays with his gun.” The logo can now be identified as Dishonored’s Dunwall Tower.
As Bakaba puts it, these themes are like “this little hunt inside the scavenger hunt” that is Deathloop, and they just wait to be discovered if the player works hard enough.
“We tried to treat everything as an evolution, but every time they mentioned the past, we were either vague enough or we disguised it,” says Bakaba. “Like, they’re talking about Mother Country and not about Tyvia, but you certainly can… once you know, you can clear things up. And yes, that makes a lot of sense. Because So, it’s great for us to imagine one of the futures of the Dishonored world and let that make sense.”
Even without knowing all these references to a larger universe, we still give Deathloop a rare 10/10. A new high watermark for Arkane and similar game developers to aspire to, Deathloop is a game like no other.”
