Playing Diablo Immortal is a treat; Intuitive and responsive touch controls are some of the best I’ve used in a mobile game, save for some minor hiccups. Skills can be performed by touching the vicinity of a virtual button and aiming by swiping my thumb. Launching a fireball or plunging your character into a horde of demons this way feels great. However, there’s still room for improved hit detection for some ranged attacks that miss when they spawn on target, causing some nasty moments in the heat of battle.
Adventures around areas of Sanctuary see other players defeating it with monsters, emphasizing Immortal’s nature as an MMO. While this design choice sacrifices the traditional random generation of the world map, I’m increasingly liking the feel of each area coming to life with real people living in the area. Immortal has many ways to group with others. That includes 8-player Warbands for tight teams along with larger 100-player Clans that can show their allegiance to PvP factions known as Immortals and Shadows. I love getting a group together to run a custom-made four-player dungeon, or even teaming up with someone on the fly to clear the area bounty and do a few Battle Pass quests.
As a free game, Diablo Immortal has several monetization options. In my experience, you can play every aspect of the game without paying a dime, and I appreciate that case. Premium battle cards (combined with freebies) and cosmetics for sale in the store are among the less intrusive spenders, done in a way that doesn’t feel exploitative. It’s also of interest, however, that some items are extremely limited in quantity to free players but are available for a real money fee. These badges provide legendary gems with variable stats and star ratings that greatly benefit the progression of the final game.
