Dmitry Bivol can still give Canelo Alvarez in September
Via Knitting Ambrosio: Eddie Hearn revealed on Thursday that WBA lightweight champion Dmitry Bivol is still fighting for Canelo Alvarez’s next match in September.
Boxing promoter Matchroom Hearn says they need to get the agreed amount for the Canelo-Bivol rematch, as Bivol (21-0, 11 KOs) didn’t agree to what was offered to him for now.
Bivol continues to be Canelo .’s Favorite Pick for his next battle despite the arrival of Jermall Charlo & Badou Jack as Plan B picks for the Mexican star.
It’s possible that Canelo is intentionally putting Bivol in limbo, making him think he won’t be in the fight, but in reality, he’s September’s main target.
Bivol and his manager, Vadim Kornilov, didn’t like the fact that Canelo had offered him a deal similar to their previous match last May, even though he beat him. They believe that if Canelo wants a rematch, he will offer a new deal.
Hearn said the WBC cruiser class champion Badou is one in the first quarter of 2024, but not this year.
With only three months left before Canelo’s next match in September, there wasn’t enough time for him to build up his strength to fight the much larger Badou in the cruiser class.
“We are working on agreements with fighters. We have offered Bivol a
agreement, which he did not accept. We need money now for both of you,” said Eddie Hearn KO Sports Artist about the rematch Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol in September.
“I still think it’s Saul’s preferred choice, but he clearly has [Jermall] Charlo, and he has [David] Benavidez. I think the match against Badou Jack could happen early next year,” Hearn continued about Canelo.
Jermall Charlo’s name was mentioned this week for a good chance of being Canelo’s next battle.
However, Charlo did not mention his fight with Canelo when speaking to Demetrius Andrade on social media on Thursday. Indeed, the undefeated Charlo agreed to fight Andrade in October.
“We have a couple of options that we will talk to him about next week. So we’ll have to see, but it’s happening with Dmitry Bivol.
“WBC will not hang the belt. So it can’t be disputed
at 168. Saul wanted the same conditions as before to prove that he could win that war under those circumstances.
“So there are a few things, but in the end, the money hasn’t been accepted, so we have to go there.”
