Dmitry Bivol: Canelo “should want” a rematch
Via Sean Jones: Dmitry Bivol says Canelo Alvarez should want a rematch after losing to him last May. WBA light heavyweight champion Bivol (21-0, 10 KOs) says he doesn’t know what Canelo will do, but he plans to win and claim the world title at 175.
Canelo initially said he would fight an immediate rematch with Bivol, but he quickly changed his mind, choosing to fight the exhausted, 40-year-old Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17.
Now, Canelo is saying that if Bivol loses his title defense against his WBA mandatory challenger Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez on November 5, he will not be eligible for a rematch.
With the way Canelo continues to face obstacles for the rematch against Bivol, it’s easy to predict that he’ll come up with a new excuse not to rematch him after he easily knocked out Zurdo Ramirez (44-0.30 KOs).
Canelo SHOULD want a rematch with Bivol, as his boxing fans are expecting him to try to avenge the loss.
Unfortunately, the way Canelo continues to set up barriers for the rematch, it’s safe to say he will NOT rematch Bivol again. When you study as bad as Canelo being Bivol’s, the last thing you want is to be back in the ring with him again for a second whistling aid**.
“I don’t know what he wants after his fight and my fight,” Dmitry Bivol told iFL TV when asked if Canelo Alvarez would trigger a rematch clause for a second matchup against him.
“Every time I date and fight, I focus on my fight. If I focus on Canelo now, it won’t help me in my fight. I have to think about Zurdo on November 5th, and then we’ll see.
“I love challenges. I think every champion likes a challenge. Head-to-head matches are a real test for him and for me. I think he should want [a rematch]. “
“I think it’s better to fight Canelo against Joshua,” Bivol said, noting that Canelo is still interested in fighting Oleksandr Usyk. “It will be much better.
“I’m glad I did, but in my mind, I just did my job,” Bivol said of his win over Canelo. “Of course, I have more Mexican boxing fans, and I’m happy. I had to do that.
“Why not? He’s in my division. Every boxer on my team can be my opponent, maybe in my next fight,” Bivol said when asked if he had want to defend against Joshua Buatsi these days or not.
“We will see. This is professional boxing. When you could make a plan with me and Buatsi, and the WBA just ruined his plan. I just focus on my fight.
“Of course, I want to fight for another belt. I’m not waiting for their fight,” Bivol said of Artur Beterbiev vs Anthony Yarde. But in my head, someone in my weight class has a belt, I want to fight him.
“Of course, it has changed [Bivol’s life after beating Canelo]. I was more interested in my people. When I went to Kyrgyzstan, a lot of people came to my training camp and wanted to do a photo shoot.
The President of Kyrgyzstan invited me, and people got to know me better before the battle. Of course, I’m still hungry, and I want more belts. My goal. Of course, I want more.
“I want to fight more against Zurdo [rather than Joshua Buatsi]. It was a good fight, and I’m happy to fight him. But when the WBA changed, it was better, I think, because I wanted to fight him [Ramirez] a few years ago since 2017.
“He is a champion in the super middle class, and he has more experience than Buatsi. Maybe he’s taller, and I know him and people know him better in America than Buatsi.
“It’s great that I can fight around the world. I can introduce myself to people all over the world. It was a new experience for me. I’m happy to fight in different places.
“Of course, fighting in America, more people know about this war. Bringing the fight to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates is also great.
