Doctor-approved winter skincare routine for radiant skin

There are a few sure signs that winter has arrived: it’s the moment you finally turn on the fire in your house or reach for a blanket to keep warm on the sofa, and your coffee order turns to foam, condition Coffee festival. A beacon that never fails to signal the start of the season? That’s right, dry skin. And it’s not just dehydration (which is actually a whole other thing), but it’s also the dryness that makes my skin look radiant. It’s a sign of the season, but it’s also a not-so-subtle reminder that it’s time to transition to a winter skincare routine.

The main goal of any cold weather skin care regimen is moisture, moisture, and then more moisture for good results. But there’s an art to how you layer in those moisturizing ingredients. So I contacted an expert, Dr. Lara Devgan, a board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of Dr. Lara Devgan Beauty Science, to explain what ingredients to look for (and avoid) as well as a step-by-step process to help tailor your winter skincare line-up.

When to switch to a winter skincare routine?

Your skin will probably tell you when it needs something different, but a good rule of thumb is to keep an eye on when you feel the chills. “As soon as you feel the air dry, start adding more moisturizing products to your routine,” says Dr. Devgan. Cold air carries less moisture with it than humidity, warmer temperatures, so skin needs a little more manual moisturizing to keep things balanced.

While summer is all about lighten everything, colder temperatures need some extra moisturizing ingredients to lock in moisture and protect the skin.

• hyaluronic acid. “This is great for immediate and prolonged hydration,” adds Dr. Devgan. “It gives the skin extra collagen while locking in moisture.”
• Niacinamide. One of the two main forms of vitamin B3, hero composition Soothes inflammation, supports collagen production and helps create a healthy skin barrier to keep your skin glowing even in extreme temperatures.
• Ceramides. Ceramides Lipids are lipids that help form our natural skin barrier. Topical supplementation with a moisturizer can make all the difference for people dealing with dry skin, eczema, or psoriasis.
• Rely on ice cream. Consider swapping out your mild cleanser for a mild or creamy cleanser. Your moisturizer can also use a rich, nourishing upgrade cream.
• On the other hand, consider cutting AHA and BHA. “They are amazing ingredients, but they tend to dry out the skin and make it more sensitive to redness,” says Dr. Devgan.
