Droupadi Murmu is the new President of India
India got its first Tribal President today as the NDA selected Droupadi Murmu winning more than 60% of the total vote value. The opponent’s Yashwant Sinha received defeat after three rounds. The president-elect will be sworn in on July 25.

Droupadi Murmu got 64.03% of the total vote value after three rounds of counting votes. Yashwant Sinha finished with 35.97%. Ms. Murmu received 2,824 votes with a value of 4,83,299. Mr. Sinha received 1,877 votes with a value of 1,89,876. A value of 5,43,000 is required to win.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with senior members of his Cabinet and BJP Chief JP Nadda visited Ms. Murmu to congratulate her. Celebrations have erupted across the country, complete with sweets and colorful tribal dances.

The counting begins at 11 a.m. at the National Assembly Building and after the preliminary counting of votes, the actual tally began at 1:30 p.m. The trends became apparent after the first round, where Ms. Murmu stood at 39%.

Assam Minister of Public Security Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Ms. Murmu. “The first tribal woman to become President is a big occasion and thanks to Prime Minister Modi for giving such a unique gift. In Assam there is an absolute euphoria, especially in the tea gardens, everyone very happy people,” he added.

The NDA’s choice of Ms. Murmu – a former Governor of Jharkhand and a tribal woman from Odisha – has overwhelmed the opposition and brought non-aligned parties to the board, such as Biju Janata Dal of Odisha. Naveen Patnaik and Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress. The move is also seen as a major political message to the tribal community, which has recently been seen as unpopular with the BJP.

Voting figures also show a significant number of cross-votes by opposition MPs and the MLA in favor of Ms Murmu. While parties declare their support for one or the other, there is no penalty for cross-voting in Presidential elections.
