E3 thinks it will return in 2023 with a live event
Electronic Entertainment Expo used to be the foundation of the video game industrythe week that every publisher, developer and fan went aroundeir calendar because where is it may have the biggest news, revelations and interviews of the year.
That was the moment, however, with “after” being any time from the 1990s to the mid-2010s. Like the previous decade. though, publishers have found that they can better manage their own news cycles over their own time, and the popularity of online newscasts increases, which means E3 is becoming less and less relevant as a blockbuster spectacle (even if it’s still useful like a genuine trade fair).
Also, you know, a global pandemic meant the show didn’t go live at the LA Convention Center for the past three years, giving competitors online referrals plenty of time to expand their wings. That didn’t help either.
Anyway, now that the pandemic is easing / people are simply stopping caring about it, live events like E3 are starting to happen again. And with a bunch of E3 replacements to run in the coming monthsThe organizers of the event have decided now is the time to announce that they will try and bring the whole event back in 2023.
“We are excited about returning in 2023 with both digital and in-person events,” Stan Pierre-Louis, Executive Director of E3 Foundation ESA, yes told washington articles. “As much as we love these digital events, how much they reach people, and we want that global reach, we also know that there’s a really strong desire for people – to be able to connect face-to-face and see each other and talk about what makes games great. ”

You can’t blame them for trying. But with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all happy making big announcements in their own time, and Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest starting to hit its stride, you have to wonder how much of that “reach to convene” is going to be left for E3— which 2021 online show is a disaster–when there was industry-only conferences like GDC are working againand the fans are now get their big reveal elsewhere.
