Electric Smart SUV #3 leaked in China
Smart’s second electric SUV went bankrupt thanks to a filing by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The Smart #3 bigger than Smart number 1with a sportier look thanks to a sleeker, more coupe-like roofline.
The front and rear full-width light bars resemble those of the smaller model, while model 3 has a similar flat door handle.
Geely has already provided a dedicated Electric Sustained Experience Architecture (SEA) for Smart #1 and it is likely #3 will share these platforms.
Full powertrain details have not been released, but according to VehicleNewsChina#3 will have the same electric drivetrain used in #1.
The #3 will be offered with single-engine rear-wheel drive and dual-motor four-wheel drive, producing 200kW and 315kW respectively.
The new crossover is said to be 4400mm long, 1844mm wide and 1556mm tall on a 2785mm wheelbase, weighing in between 1740-1890kg.
That makes it 130mm longer, 22mm wider and 80mm lower than the #1 on a 35mm longer wheelbase and makes it roughly the size of a car. Mercedes-Benz EQA.
Battery specifications and range figures are unknown at this stage, but the smaller #1 uses a 66kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese battery and offers a range of 420 km to 440 km on a cycle. WLTP submission.
Smart #1 also supports AC charging up to 22kW and DC charging up to 150kW.
Not sure if a hot Brabus version will be offered as above #1. The dual-motor performance model produces 315kW of power and 543Nm of torque, enough to propel the small SUV to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds.
Originally a city car specialist best known for his ForTwo city car, Smart is now owned 50:50 by Chinese automaker Geely and Mercedes-Benz.
As part of this agreement, announced in 2019, Mercedes-Benz is responsible for the design of Smart’s next-generation vehicles while Geely handles engineering and production.
The brand now also exclusively produces electric vehicles.
It’s trying reposition yourself in the marketwith Smart Vice President Daniel Lescow said: “The length of the vehicle alone is no longer a deciding factor for us… we have redefined the requirements for Smart…We want to radiate. appear more upscale and not overly playful.”
At this point, Mercedes-Benz and Geely have not given any indication that the Smart brand will return to Australia. It left the Australian market in 2015.
