Europe details the ban on gasoline / diesel from 2035, with an exemption for large displacement supercars

The European Union has been locked in the new regulations will ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles are from 2035although store manufacturers have made some concessions.

Retail manufacturers that produce between 1,000 and 10,000 vehicles a year will be allowed to sell their gas-powered cars for 12 months, opening the door for Lamborghini and Ferrari supercars to get an extra year of ICE-powered cars in some form.

Brands that produce less than 1000 vehicles a year will be completely dropped from the rules…now.

In addition to the low output, carmakers will also be able to register internal combustion cars to run “exclusively on CO2-neutral fuels after 2035 under EU law”.

In particular, Porsche has turned to synthetic fuels (also known as eFuels) as a way to keep internal combustion alive in a tightly controlled world on emissions.

The ICE sales ban will be implemented ahead of stricter emissions regulations as manufacturers reduce gasoline power and increase sales of their electric vehicles.

Having heralded a 37.5% reduction in transport emissions compared to 2021 by 2030, the EU is now planning to implement a 55% reduction.

Automakers have begun signaling their intention to end the sale of internal combustion vehicles. Volvo and Renault have committed to ending ICE sales by 2030, Volkswagen will stop by 2033 in Europe, while Jaguar will lead the way by converting to electric EVs in 2026.

However, industry celebrities are not common on board with this move.

Carlos Tavares, head of the Stellantis consortium that includes brands ranging from Jeep and Dodge to Fiat and Peugeot, has been outspoken about Europe’s recent automotive policies.

In January 2022, he warned that plans to phase out the internal combustion system by 2035 were very risky.

He said in a joint interview with Les Echos, Handelsblatt, Corriere della Sera and El Mundo – as forwarded through Reuters.

“Given Europe’s current energy mix, an electric car needs to drive 70,000 km to offset the carbon footprint of the battery manufacturing process and catch up with a light, hybrid vehicle that costs as much as half an EV (electric vehicle),” he added.

Just last week he continued by arguing “The dogmatic decision to ban the sale of thermal cars by 2035 has uncontrollable social consequences.”

BMW boss Oliver Zipse, speaking on behalf of the lobbying group for European carmakers, called for “the framework conditions needed to meet this target to be reflected in EU policies”. .

“These include abundant renewable energy, a seamless network of public and private charging infrastructure, and access to raw materials,” said Zipse. European Automotive News.
