‘Every day she’s getting stronger’: Very rare hairless goat born on B.C. farm
Owner of a farm on Vancouver Island there is a new and very rare butler.
The precious goat was born in Maple Heart Ranch on Friday but was immediately rejected by her mother because she was completely hairless.
Owner Conny Rohr said they were shocked to see the hairless bundle emerge.
“(My partner) said, ‘Oh she’s naked, she’s hairless!” Rohr exclaims.
When it became clear that the mother goat would not help raise her children, the couple stepped in.
“It was really scary, actually,” said Rohr. “You have to have colostrum right away, for babies they need it within the first half hour so we express breast milk immediately to get colostrum right away.”
Her partner Gary Rogers has taken on the main role of caretaker and now Precious follows him everywhere.
He said he feeds Precious with a syringe every three hours “just like a normal baby”.
“I don’t get much sleep.”
Rogers milked the mother goat in the morning and evening, then warmed it up to feed Precious.
When the couple asked the vet for help, they were surprised to learn that he had never even heard of a hairless goat before.
“On the Internet, we couldn’t find any other hairless goats,” says Rogers.
They are currently documenting Precious’s journey on TikTok under MapleHeartRanch.
“Every day she gets stronger and better,” says Rogers. “Every day we are looking for ways to take care of her, keep her warm and dry and see what happens in the future.”
Rohr added Precious is “pretty good”, she’s gaining weight, she’s eating and she loves being warmed by the fire.
Surname started a GoFundMe Since Precious can’t live outside and the farm is off-grid, they don’t have easy access to electricity to turn on the lights and keep the house warm.
“Like all of our animals, we do what’s best for (them),” says Rogers. “Our animals come first and every day we do what’s best for them.
“We help them, they help us.”
