F1 set to assess Mercedes request to review Brazil incident
Formula One managers will hear Mercedes representatives on Thursday to decide whether to approve a request for a review of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix breakdown between championship contenders Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
Mercedes requested a review on Tuesday based on substantial new evidence that has emerged since last Sunday’s race at Interlagos.
Red Bull’s championship leader Verstappen appears to force seven-time Mercedes world champion Hamilton off the track as they jostle for the lead.
The managers took note of the 48 lap incident during the race but concluded, on the basis of the evidence they had, that there was no need for an investigation.
Hamilton eventually overcame Verstappen 11 laps later and won the race but Mercedes boss Toto Wolff thinks the Dutchman should have been awarded a penalty of at least five seconds.
Management said in a statement Wednesday that the hearing will determine whether a review right exists in the case.
The Mercedes team manager and up to three witnesses were asked to participate in a video conference at 17:00 local time (14:00 GMT) ahead of this weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix.
