F1 to host three sprint races in 2022 with revised points format
Formula one will have three qualifying sprints in 2022 with points now awarded to the top eight instead of just the top three, it was confirmed at the F1 Commission on Monday.
The revised weekend format with qualifying on Friday night, sprint race on Saturday and main race on Sunday, will take place at GP Emilia Romagna April, Austrian GP July and Brazilian GP November .
The winner of the sprint at each of those events will score eight points, instead of three like last year, with the score dropping to eighth place, scoring one point.
F1 has also confirmed the record books will now recognize the driver who took the pole position as the driver who completed the traditional Friday qualifying in first place, rather than the winner of the race. Running Race.
F1 said it had made the changes “based on feedback from fans, media and teams”.
The F1 Commission has seen bosses of all 10 teams meet in London, with future FIA chief Michael Masi and the investigation into the handling of the final laps that decide the GP’s title Abu Dhabi is at the top of the agenda. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said he will present the regulator’s response to the events of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix later. promises “structural changes” and an “action plan” in a statement on Monday.
The F1 Commission has also worked on tweaking the Sporting Regulations to avoid a repeat of last year’s quirky Belgian Grand Prix. The race at Spa was declared a race despite the drivers completing only two laps behind the safety car due to heavy rain, with the top ten awarded half of the usual championship points for each position. .
McLaren CEO Zak Brown was one of the strongest critics of that decision, saying the fans at Spa-Francorchamps deserved a refund and that it shouldn’t count as a real race as no lap is completed.
F1 has adjusted its rules to say that the race leader must complete a minimum of two laps to be awarded any points.
It also made clear what would happen to future championship scores if races were forced to finish early.
If a race ends when the leader has completed more than two laps but less than 25 percent of the scheduled distance, points are awarded as follows: 1st (6 points), 2nd (4 points) , 3rd place (3 points), 4th place (2 points), 5th (1 point).
If the race ends when the leader has completed more than 25 percent but less than 50 percent of the scheduled distance, points will be awarded as follows: 1st place (13 points), 2nd place (10 points), 1st place 3 (8 points), 4th (6 points), 5th (5 points), 6th (4 points), 7th (3 points), 8th (2 points), 9th (1 point).
If a race ends when a driver has completed more than 50 percent but less than 75 percent of the expected distance, points will be awarded as follows: 1st (19 points), 2nd (14 points), 1st place 3 (12 points), 4th (9 points), 5th (8 points), 6th (6 points), 7th (5 points), 8th (3 points), 9th (2 points), 10th (1 point).
