‘F*ck Around and Find Out’
Since he returned from a long hiatus, Last week TonightJohn Oliver’s yes masterfully dismissing right-wing hysteria about critical race theory and told former President George W. Bush to “be quiet.” about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In the Sunday evening edition of his HBO show, he expressed gratitude to the brave Ukrainian people for fighting against the morally reprehensible Russian military offensive.
“Ukrainian citizens continue to show amazing signs of resistance, demonstrating that they are indeed a ‘find and learn’ country in Eastern Europe,” said Oliver.
He then watched a CNN interview with a Ukrainian grandmother (and retired economist) showing the media the only weapon she had: Molotov cocktails.
She told CNN: “Let those Russian bastards come here. “We are ready to welcome them.”
Meanwhile, the Russian government has criminalized any media criticism of its war in Ukraine, and banned Facebook and Twitter in the country. The Russian Ministry of Education even aired an outraged propaganda video showing a little girl answering questions about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and getting some really weird answers.
“I have a question: ‘special operations’… what does it mean?” the girl asked. “That’s when goals lead to peace,” replied the Russian official. “We do not attack residential buildings. We don’t hit civilians. We do not destroy social infrastructure — kindergartens, schools, water works, substations. ”
Of course, it’s all pointless.
“You’ve actually done almost all of that!” Oliver exclaimed. “Russian air strikes have destroyed hospitals, schools and homes. Also, I really don’t want to make notes for state propaganda, but if you’re going to lie to a child’s face, maybe pick a less creepy man to do it. ”
“However, despite Russia’s efforts to control this narrative, we continue to see protests there,” he continued. “This war is not only morally unavoidable, but the impact of global sanctions is now being felt at every level of Russian society.”
Unfortunately, as Oliver points out at the end of the segment, Russia’s “human rights abuses” continue in Ukraine. A Russian military attack attacked a suburb of Kyiv on Sundaykilling two children and several other civilians.
