Earlier, on February 14, the finance minister met the board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in New Delhi and in her speech she outlined the thinking behind the budget and government priorities.
This year’s budget, presented on February 1, estimates nominal gross domestic product (GDP) growth at 11.1%. The government expects this growth to be fueled by a major capital expenditure program outlined in the Budget that aims to attract private investment by revitalizing economic activity and creating demand.
Ms. Sitharaman increased the capex by 35.4% for 2022-23 to Rs 7.5 lakh to further the investment-led pandemic-hit economy recovery. This year’s investment is pegged at Rs 5.5 lakh crore.
