On a night when everyone showed up excited to see Dustin Wolf, it was the netminder and another fellow rookie who played big roles in the team’s latest escape act.
“Flames recipe right there,” said Coleman of his team’s three-goal comeback in the third against Carolina.
“Really, there’s only two ways to win in this league and we’ve got one of them down pretty dang well.
“If we can figure out the other half we’re going to be in good shape.”

The other half, meaning, not getting scored on first and trailing most of the night.
For the eighth-straight game the Flames surrendered the first goal, a redirection two minutes in that Wolf had no chance on.
Six minutes later a similar snipe had the hosts down two.
And while the Flames have a well-earned reputation as a never-say-die bunch, there was little sign over the next forty minutes that home team heroics would again ensue.
In fact, the fans sprinkled in a few boos late in the second, as the Hurricanes did well to keep the Flames in check.
But just when you least expected it, cue the comeback.
Rasmus Andersson wandered into the slot five minutes into the third to bury a loose puck that kick-started a three-goal spree over six minutes that saw Connor Zary’s fifth of the year set up Coleman’s short-handed winner.

From there, the Flames’ masked fan favourite held the fort with a few more of his 30 saves to clinch his first NHL win of the season, and second of his four-game career.
“He’s got an unflappable swagger,” was the way Ryan Huska described his young netminder’s ability to shake off the two early goals and focus on keeping his club in a game that looked lost.

MacKenzie Weegar, who said before the game he too was excited to see the AHL star everyone in town is fawning over, said the 22-year-old netminder lived up to the hype.
“He made some huge saves in the second, even one huge one that popped out to the slot,” said Weegar.
“If we go down 3-0 in the second It’s tough to come back.
“When he comes to the bench for TV timeouts he’s so calm and composed.
“He looks pretty elite.”

Even when Sebastian Aho appeared to tie the game with five minutes left, Wolf calmly motioned to the ref the stick of Martin Necas had indeed impeded his ability to square up for the shot, setting up a coach’s challenge that negated the goal and preserved a 3-2 win.
“My objective for the rest of the game was to challenge myself to fight through those (redirected shots and screens) even harder than I was, and we did a great job boxing out the last two periods,” he said of the early setbacks that only temporarily dampened the enthusiasm the crowd showed for the club’s goalie of the future.

“I’ve only played a couple games and to hear how much they cherish their goaltenders it’s something I’m (grateful for).”
Coming off a season in which the Flames had just two third period comeback wins all year, the Flames now lead the league with six such wins.
They’re second with eight total comebacks, which has plenty to do with being tied for the league lead by allowing the first goal 17 times.

“To know you have the ability to come back in games late in the year is important because last year we didn’t have that ability,” said Coleman, whose seventh goal ties him with Elias Lindholm for the team lead.
“I’m really proud of the group — it could have been easy to let that one slip away from us and get into a three-game skid, but guys stuck with it and fought back.
“It’s not the way you want to do it every time, but it just seems to be our thing.”
And plenty of it was made possible by Wolf’s steady response to two goals that no goaltender could be faulted for.
“Looking back at it, Wolfy’s the reason we were still only down by two,” said Coleman of the seventh-round pick who has dominated the junior and AHL ranks the last four years.
“He’s got a lot of confidence, he didn’t seem shaken by it.
“He believes in himself and we believe in him back there.”
And we all believe we’ll be seeing plenty more of him for years to come.
