In a state of severe insecurity, the Prime Minister’s convoy was stuck on an overpass in Punjab yesterday due to road blockade by protesting farmers. Images from a position near Hussainiwala showed his convoy trapped, with Special Protection Group personnel forming a circle around the vehicle he was in.
The Prime Minister was in Punjab to attend a poll rally in Ferozepur and several other events. After the blockade, he returned to Delhi without attending events.
The Union Home Office described the episode as a “major hole” in the PM’s security and the BJP accused Punjab’s ruling Parliament of “madness” and “murder intent”.
Parliament claimed that it had made every deal with the cooperation of Prime Minister Modi’s security agencies and questioned the last minute change of route. Minister Charanjit Singh Channi insisted there was no threat to the Prime Minister. “I would give my life to protect the Prime Minister,” he told the media, “but he is not in danger.”
