French Vogue impressed when praising Julia Fox’s hijab photo: ‘Yes with hijab, but not with hijab’
Netizens are calling French Vogue for its “hypocrisy” after it posted a photo of Julia Fox wearing a hijab along with a caption that read: “Yes with a hijab! Swipe left to see your synopsis of Julia Fox and Kanye West style journey at the haute couture shows in Paris this week. ”
The caption was then changed to “Swipe left to see your summary of Julia Fox and Kanye West’s Style Journey at the Paris haute couture shows this week” without giving any explanation, but social media users were unimpressed.
In the post, which includes three photos, Fox was clicked to head to Paris Men’s Fashion Week in a Balenciaga leather jacket, hijab and a pair of sunglasses. In the other two photos, the actor is seen with his bride Kanye West.
Why is it controversial? Well, for starters, the post has been deemed offensive to Muslim women living in the country, who have been accused of perpetuating a culture of fear of Islam.
According to a report in The Independent, the right of Muslim women to wear the hijab has been contested in France since 1989, when three students were suspended from school for refusing to remove the headscarf. Since then, there have been many such suspensions and in 2011 the country banned face coverings like niqab and burqa. While the burqa covers the entire face, the niqab covers everything except the eyes.
French Vogue annoyed netizens by double standards praising a white woman wearing a headscarf in a country where Muslim women are oppressed for doing so. “It’s not that Vogue FRANCE writes ‘yes to headscarves’ as if the country itself hadn’t banned a specific demographic from wearing them,” one person pointed out.
Another wrote: “It’s ironic that French Vogue advertises ‘hijabs’ on white women while Muslim women wearing hijabs are banned from public life.”
“’Yes with a headscarf’, but no with a headscarf. Really smart,” another commented.
“How can you post about a white woman’s hijab, but it’s banned in your country for Muslim women?” another comment read.
The Independence The report also mentions that earlier this month, the French Senate voted in favor of banning the wearing of “religious symbols” during sports competitions, including the headscarf.
ONE CNN The report said that with the 2011 ban, France became the first European country to ban wearing face coverings in public, such as balaclavas, face masks, burqas and niqabs. Other countries such as Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark are also following partial face covering bans.
