Toyota’s coupe sports car history dates back to the 1967 2000GT, a crafting legend that sold only 62 copies in the US. Thereafter, four generations of the increasingly capable Supra were available in the United States from 1979 to 1998. Reports of the Supra’s return surfaced in 2012 when Toyota and BMW announced they would jointly develop a new one. sports car. The current Supra, a two-seat hatchback, is based on the same rear-wheel drive platform as the 2019 BMW Z4 road car. The styling is inspired by the 2014 Toyota FT-1 Concept drawn in the company’s Calty studio. in California. The designers are said to be inspired by the previous-generation Supra and the 2000 GT, but it’s completely modern – and doesn’t look like the Z4. Supras traditionally run in-line six-cylinders, so BMW’s 3.0-liter turbocharged engine is good for 335 horses and 365 pound-feet of torque seems to be at home under the bonnet of the car. The first 1500 Supras for the US market were Launch Editions based on 3.0 Premium. Three colors are available: Absolute White, Night Black, and Renaissance Red 2.0. All include red door mirror caps and 19-inch matte black wheels. The white and black Launch versions have red trim on the seats, steering wheel and dashboard, but the same areas are finished in black on cars with red exteriors. All receive a individually numbered badge on the dash.
For 2021, Toyota has added a cheaper, four-cylinder 2.0-liter Supra with a 255-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Torque peaks at 295 pound-feet. Again, the only transmission is an eight-speed automatic. The Supra 2.0 runs on a smaller front brake, along with a traditional “passive” suspension and a rear differential. It also has a simpler four-speaker stereo and manually adjustable seats. Still, the weight is off by more than 200 pounds, and the Supra 2.0 sprints from stand-up to 60 mph in five seconds.
The six-cylinder ’21 Supras benefits from a beefed-up engine that makes 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds is an improvement of 0.2 seconds. The cars also received revised suspension and revised programming for power steering, adaptive suspension, stability control and a rear differential.
Also new is that the A91 Edition is based on 3.0 Premium. Production is limited to 1000 pieces, available in the Night Mode (black) and model-specific Refraction (white). The A91s has a carbon fiber rear spoiler and mirror caps, C-pillar graphics and matte black wheels. Black interior with blue border is also an exclusive product of A91.
The base price of the Supra for 2020 is $ 49,990 for version 3.0; $53,990 for 3.0 Premium; and $55,250 for the Launch Edition. The price of the Supra ’21 starts at $42,990 for the 2.0 version. Among the six-cylinder models, the 3.0 is priced at $50,990; 3.0 Premium costs $54,490 and the A91 Edition asks for $55,990.

It might surprise some people, but we think the 2021 Supra 2.0 could be the best choice. Simplicity and lightness often combine for great sports cars to be remembered, and the $8000 price advantage over the more powerful 3.0 can’t be ignored.
