Germany train derailment: Four killed, 15 severely injured after accident in Bavaria
The regional train was heading in the direction of Munich when it derailed near Burgrain, north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a ski resort in the Bavarian Alps.
” The number of people injured in the unfortunate train crash has increased to four,” Upper Bavaria Southern Police, which carried out the rescue efforts, tweeted Friday afternoon.
Of the approximately 30 injured passengers, 15 were seriously injured and taken to a hospital in the surrounding area, police said.
Stephan Scharf, an official with Garmisch-Partenkirchen county, told CNN earlier that 60 people were receiving medical treatment.
The accident happened on the last day of school before Pentecost, a religious holiday celebrated in Bavaria. It was not immediately clear how many students were on board when the train left the tracks.
Photos and videos from the scene shared on social media showed the double-decker train carriage in the area rolled down an embankment and got caught in a tree as rescuers carried people on stretchers.
Prosecutors and police have opened an investigation into the cause of the crash, police told CNN.
