Gervonta Davis injured her hand but kept the title with a decisive unanimous victory over Isaac Cruz
LOS ANGELES – Gervonta Davis shot to stardom with the help of Floyd Mayweather and an explosive series of knockouts.
The “tank” had his cheerleader and mentor watching from the box, but the game-ending shot never materialized. In fact, Isaac Cruz, a lower-class team from Mexico, did not appear to be dangerous.
Davis didn’t deliver the spectacular performance fans had come to expect, but he remained undefeated with a tougher-than-expected decisive win over Cruz on Sunday before 15,580 attendees were announced at Staples Center.
Two judges scored it 115-113 with a third overall score of 116-112 for the Baltimore native, who retained his “regular” WBA lightweight title.
“I injured my hand so I couldn’t get him out of there,” said Davis, a left-handed barley hunter in the last two innings. “I was throwing down and I hit him on the head; I messed it up.”
