Via Knitting Ambrosio: Stephen Edwards predicts a knockout win for Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis over Hector Luis Garcia on January 7 on Showtime’s pay-per-view.
Coach Edwards finds 5’8″ Hector Garcia (16-0, 10 KOs) too small for 5’5 1/2″ Tank Davis (27-0.25 KOs), even though he’s taller than he is. almost three inches and has a two-inch reach advantage.
Hector is transitioning from super featherweight to fighting Davis in the main event at Capitol One Arena in Washington, DC
Davis was seen as the clear favorite, but Edwards felt that you couldn’t disqualify Garcia as he was on the verge of two big wins over Chris Colbert and Roger Gutierrez.
“I supported Tank in the fight, but it was still a fight,” Stephen Edwards told fight about the match between Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Hector Garcia on January 7. “You have to have a certain amount of optimism and self-respect when your guy fights.
“Hector Garcia is about to have a big win over the boy from New York [Chris Colbert], and he currently has an attractive trainer Bob Santos. He’s an Olympic athlete and has a pedigree.
“I think he’s a bit small compared to Tank. A little too straight up in the air, but it’s a fight. Let’s see what happens. I think Tank clamped him. The tank will grip him for between six and eight hours.
“Gervonta is one of the best boxers in the world, whether you know it or not. He is an excellent warrior. He may not have. He may not have the matchmaking everyone wants because he’s not fighting to be a great boxer.
“He may not be in the fights the public would like to see him in. I’m just talking about straight possibilities. I don’t get into all of that because that’s the business side of it, and it’s a business and a sport.
“I’m talking about the possibility of frankness. There are no ten better boxers in the world than him [Gervonta]. Everything is underrated. His stab is underrated. Everyone says he’s left-handed. His right hand is underrated.
“His poise is underrated; his chin is underrated; His condition is underrated. That boy can fight. He can go. Unfortunately, he didn’t join his talented A-rankers. So we didn’t see it with them.
“He’s one of the few guys that if I were lightweight right now, that’s the guy you don’t want to fight. Lots of other guys will blackmail you, but he’ll put you in a body bag.
“He can hurt you. He’s a very explosive fighter, he’s mean, and he’ll try to hurt you with his boxing skills above all else, and he’s conditioned. You don’t see him running out of gas,” Edwards said of Gervonta.
“I’m telling you. That boy can fight. People criticize him, but the only thing you can criticize is that he probably didn’t fight Haneys, Shakur’s and those kinds of people.
“I know they are working with another advertising agency. I don’t want to get involved in that. But in terms of ability, there are three boxers who can move the needle with their abilities.
“I’m not talking about impressing you by taking down the brawlers. I’m talking about three boxers who give you sportsmanship, they give you talent, and after overtaking you, they bring you brutality and violence.
“Do you know who that is? Jaron Ennis, ‘The Beast’ Inoue and Tank Davis, It’s three guys who combine that violence with monstrous talent. Lots of talented guys, but they don’t take the chance. They just need to go ahead and win decisively.
“Then there are a lot of guys who are punchers, let’s say one [Artur] Beterbiev, but they don’t have such exceptional talent that you look at them and say, ‘Oh my God, this is a strange talent.’ Those three had both. Edwards is a special guy and he can fight,” Edwards said.
