Veteran film producer Yash Johar produced many blockbusters, including ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ (2003), ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ (2001) and ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998). He has also produced some great Hollywood movies. Some of them are ‘The Jungle Book’ (1994), Last Dance (1996) and Armageddon (1998). Johar held various important positions, including the General Secretary of Film Industry Welfare Trust, Member of the United Producers Forum, Member of the Managing Committee of Film Producers Guild of India Ltd. and Treasurer of the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers.

Johar was born on September 6, 1929, in Amritsar, Punjab, in a Punjabi family. He was married to Hiroo, sister of filmmaker Yash Chopra. The couple has a son Karan Johar. His son never married and has twins (a boy and a girl) through surrogacy. Johar named his son Yash after his father and his daughter Roohi after rearranging his mother’s name Hiroo.

Yash Johar started his career in the film industry as a photographer. He then went on to work in the production unit of many movies, including Sunil Dutt’s production company Ajanta Arts in 1952 and Dev Anand’s Navketan films in the 60s and 70s involving movies like ‘Guide’ (1965), ‘Jewel Thief’ (1967), ‘Prem Pujari’ (1970) and ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ (1971).

Johar’s new phase in his career began in 1976 when he established his own production house, Dharma Productions. The Production house produced some of the most extravagant movies of all time, like the ‘Dostana’ (1980), which was also the first movie of the banner and a huge box office success.

He produced a handful of other movies in the 1980s and early 1990s, most notably ‘Agneepath’ (1990), ‘Gumrah’ (1993) and ‘Duplicate’ (1998).

Yash Johar’s ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998) was his son Karan Johar’s directorial debut, starring the famous pair Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol along with Rani Mukerji playing the second lead. The movie became an all-time blockbuster hit, even in the overseas market. Apart from winning several awards in different categories and events, it also won the National Award.
