A person dirty by good magic (hip 1112) finished the fastest quarter-mile run on Saturday’s final session of the Ocala Breeders Spring Sale for 2-year-olds in training, finishing become the distance in :20 3/5 to shipper Tom McCrocklin.
“I don’t track my horses at any time,” says McCrocklin. “All these 2-year-olds I sell, I never had a stopwatch in hand. But at this point, I think I know who can run and who can’t. That chubby girl has been seeming nimble for a while and today she showed up and got a really good breeze.
McCrocklin bought the youngster for $190,000 during last year’s Fasig-Tipton October sale. She came out of Tiz Heavenly (Tiznow), the daughter of classified multi-stakes winner Tasha’s Miracle (Harlan’s Holiday).
“good magic and her physicality,” McCrocklin said of his decision to buy the dirty girl last year. “She is very, very beautiful, very fit. There are some horses fast on the female side of the pedigree. Tasha’s Miracle is very agile. She runs in Railbird and Hollywood Oaks. And there are some very fast horses under the third dam. Obviously when you’re selling 2-year-olds, speed comes first.”
According to McCrocklin, the animal’s pedigree has advantages beyond speed.
“I love good magic partly because it adds some Classical stamina to the pedigree,” he says. “He is the son of make for curlybut I don’t think he’s a typical son of make for curly. He is very precocious. He is a very good 2 year old. [The filly] many good magic quality in her. And she came out of a mare Tiznow. So again, we’re bringing speed and stamina to both sides of the pedigree.”
The five horses that shared the fastest time of the day were: 9 4/5.
The Purebred Caliente sent Solomini’s son (hip 1109, videotapes) for the fastest sharing of the day. Chestnut is the first pony of Timberlea (Flatter), half-sister whose winner has been classified Untrapped (Trappe Shot). He was purchased by Gerardo Barragan for $50,000 in the Keeneland sale last September.
A pony of a Triple Crown winner justification (hip 1124, videotapes) successfully worked on Saturday for Scanlon Training & Sales, which bought him for $125,000 during last year’s Fasig-Tipton October sale. Bay was not among the winners of the Touching Beauty ranking race (faucet).
A person dirty by Demarchelier (GB) (hip 1128, videotapes) worked in :9 4/5 for Niall Brennan Stables. The minor has come out of Treasured (Arch), half-sister to the winner of the Desert Ghosts stake. She was purchased by Cayson Lane for $16,000 at weaning during the Keeneland sale in November 2021.
Envision Equine sent a pony by army mule (hip 1187, videotapes) to share Saturday’s long bullet. Bay is outside of Western Kitty (Western Fame) and is a half-brother to What in Blazes (Straight Fire) is staked. He comes from the family of Tiznow, Budroyale and payer and bred by KMN Racing.
A pony of a GI Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist (hip 1219, videotapes) submitted his debut work to Best a Luck Farm, which bought him for $150,000 during last year’s Fasig-Tipton October sale. He was sold for $130,000 at weaning at the November 2021 Keeneland sale. Of the underrated Zetta Z (Bernardini), the minor’s third dam was the GI winner. Breeders’ Cup Distaff Unbridled Elaine (Song of the Unbridled).
After sending nearly 30 horses to work during the week, McCrocklin admits it was a relief to finish the seven-day marathon.
“I am very pleased overall,” he said of his shipment results. “We had 27 winds and 25 horses coming in: 20 and changing direction or: 21 and changing direction in a quarter mile—all of my horses go a quarter as designed. I pride myself on consistency.”
Regarding track conditions throughout the week, McCrocklin added, “I am very pleased with the track. I think two things that go well with this track are temperature and wind. There’s nothing OBS can do about either of those things. I find that if you’re having a hard time, so are everyone else. If you have an advantage, so will everyone else. And I’ll let the buyer judge and score according to the curve.
“In terms of temperature, it’s no secret that the cooler it gets, it tends to get faster and bounce a bit more. And the hotter it gets, the more it tends to slow down and get a little sticky. But it’s a very safe surface and the horses tend to come back very well after their gentle winds. So far, our X-rays have been really good, so no complaints on the track. I think OBS did a great job.”
OBS’s March sale kicked off the teen sales season with impressive numbers — led by sales of five million dollars — last month, and McCrocklin expects it to continue to stay strong. strong at the top of the market, but worried about the lower level of the playing field.
“I think it’s a very deep market,” he said. “You hear it everywhere you go, but I worry more about the middle and lower classes. I don’t see that we have enough buyers that we need. I’ve developed this idiom, it’s easier for me to sell a horse for $200,000 than it is for $30,000. I think that’s the world we live in right now.”
