Google Meet introduces live translated subtitles, adds companion mode for hybrid meetings
Google Meet is getting new features to improve teamwork and make video meetings more productive. Google has begun rolling out live translated subtitles widely to Google Meet. New functionality automatically translates chats from one language to another in real-time in Google Meet on Web and mobile. Additionally, Google Meet is getting a new Companion Mode feature on the Web that allows users to add members remotely via an additional screen. Companion Mode provides remote members with all of the advanced interactive features that physically present members have access to. The new functionality is compatible with Google Meet and Nest Hub Max hardware.
Google announced summation New features for Google Meet via its blog post. Live translated subtitles, which automatically translate spoken language into other languages, are available on Google Meet on the Web and mobile devices. The function currently supports English to French, German, Portuguese and Spanish voice translation. Subtitles will appear at the bottom of the screen during a Google Meet video call. Google says the new real-time translation feature will help reduce language barriers during video calls.
Companion mode allow employees are present in actual meeting rooms to connect with their remote teammates through an additional display. It gives everyone access to interactive controls and features no matter where they are. Companion Mode allows them to access interactive controls and features such as chat, screen sharing, raise hands, polls, host controls, and more. Companion Mode is available on the Web through Meet hardware and the Nest Hub Max. Everyone can join the meeting using Companion Mode from the green room before their meeting. Users can join a meeting in Companion Mode by accessing g.co/companion or g.co/present on compatible hardware. The latter can be used for those who want to share content or screens.
Participants using Companion Mode will be counted as separate participants and their tiles will be hidden from the video grid to maximize screen space. Initially, Google previewed Companion Mode for Google Meet at Google I/O events held in May 2021.
Google says it will start offering live translated subtitles feature to Google Workspace Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade and Google Workspace for Education Plus customers on January 12. The search giant will release this feature to all users in about 15 days. Google Workspace Individual customers or users with personal Google Accounts cannot currently use it.
On the other hand, Companion Mode will be rolled out gradually starting January 13 to all Google Workspace Personal customers and users with personal Google accounts.
